A Look Ahead...

Mike Trujillo said it best on the postgame show, "the future looks very bright" for the ISU women's team. And with a large number of extremely talented players graduating off other programs, that future may be sooner rather then later.

A lot can happen between now and August when open gym begins, or October when practice starts or November when the season gets going but as of right now this is what Seton and his staff will have to work with next year:

Seniors:
Anna Lee Policicchio
Apiphany Woods

Redshirt Juniors:
Freya Newton

Juniors:
Sherise Porchia
Katrina Bacovcin
April Dawson * (non scholarship player)
Kyndall Adams
Brooke Blair * (signed with ISU in fall period)

Redshirt Sophomores:
Grace Kenyon
Lindsay Brown

Sophomores:
Juliet Jones
Lindsey Woodworth * (non scholarship player)
Megan Hochstein
Stephanie Somers

Redshirt Freshmen:
Jenna Morch

Freshmen:
Britanny Kochenderfer * (signed with ISU in fall period)
Saylair Grandon * (signed with ISU in fall period)

Front court should be as good as anybody's in the league. Deep and talented, although they need to gain some strength. I think there is talent in the backcourt, but not much experience. It may take awhile for Seton to settle on a rotation and for a couple of the many guards to assert themselves. A three point shooter or two needs to emerge. But right now I'd definitely vote ISU in the top five.

On the postgame show last night Mike Trujillo mentioned that he thought Brooke Blair could be the person to step in and replace Becca in the backcourt at shooting guard.

Brad's point about the guard situation is certainly valid. It will be interesting to see who Seton ultimately gives the first shot at point guard to. That's a key position in his offense and both Sherise and Juliet don't have a lot of experience yet.

Maybe he makes another out of the box move like two years ago when he moved Lindsey Reed to that spot and she became first team all conference. We'll see how it all shakes out.

When you look at next year's projected roster you still see nine players who are underclassmen, that's still a lot, however they aren't overall as inexperienced as this past year's team. That should make a real difference since some of those underclassmen saw significant playing time this year.

Again Grace is going to be under a lot of pressure next year, she was hit with a lot to take on as a freshmen and that might have contributed to her hitting the wall the final three weeks. But she should be better equipped to handle that next year having gone through it. She probably had more things put on her as a freshmen than anybody I can think of save for Ash Vella...and she turned out all right! ;)

Another key I think is that someone out of the junior class is going to need to step up and contribute with meaningful minutes next season, that would take some of the load off the younger players.

Blair averaged 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in JC this year. Her numbers improved as the season went on. When checked a month or so ago, she was only averaging about 8 points and her shooting percentage wasn't very good. She raised her fg % to 43 and her three point shooting to 35% at the end of the season. She also shot 80 % from the line, which is good to see.
