Northern Colorado’s Andre Spieght broke the Big Sky Conference single season scoring record formerly held by Idaho State’s Dave Wagnon in the Bears’ win over Ill.-Chicago last night. Wagnon scored 845 points in the 1965-66 season, a record that stood an impressive 52 seasons. Perhaps even more impressive, Wagnon established the record in 26 games. It took Speight 38 to break it.
I should qualify all of that by noting Wagnon was pretty much a one-man show on a bad ISU team (9-17), while Speight set the record in the context of a good team who got the Big Sky’s first ever post-season tournament championship. But still have to give Wagnon a tip of the cap.
