A Tale of Three Coaches
Coach A
A very successful Big Sky Coach. Took a job at a MWC school, replacing a very successful coach in a very successful basketball program. He was given a large salary. First year, he did well with a 29-6 record and made it to the sweet 16. Second and third season really struggled, going 14-15 and 11-19. Fired at the end of his third year. Some thought the firing was hasty and too soon. The coach inherited a very talented team and did very well his first year, then lost a lot of quality players and had to rebuild. He was not given the time in the high pressure environment to rebuild and become successful with his own recruits.
Coach B
A very successful Big Sky and WAC coach. He started his current job with a salary in the low $100K range. Currently makes about $450K and this amount grows slowly each year. Averages about 25 wins a year and has been in the post season for 11 straight years. Has been courted by many other bigger programs and offered some big contracts. Has turned them down – prefers the stability, security, and autonomy of his current job.
Coach C
A very successful Big Sky coach. Has won 3 Big Sky championships in 4 years. Will make it to the post-season this year (hopefully to the NCAA tournament). Is being discussed as a potential coach for other programs that may offer more money, but not necessarily a better job and program.
Coach C needs to be reminded of the stories of coach A and B as he is courted by bigger programs. He has been an assistant to both Coach A and Coach B and knows their stories first hand. Coach C can experience the Coach B outcome if he stays the course.
