Portland State lands local guard

Allison Greene always thought that when it came time to pick a college, she'd want to get out of the Northwest. But after more than a few nights on the road, that changed for the 5-foot-9 guard from Beaverton, Ore., who gave a verbal commitment to Portland State last week.
"The more I've been traveling the more I get back and think, 'Ah, it feels good to be home,'" said Greene, a versatile guard from Southridge High School. "I felt really comfortable there, I already knew some of the players"

Greene said that part of the Vikings' pull was that she'd be able to play in front of her older brother, Jeremy, who has missed most of her high school career while serving in Iraq.

"It's home," she said. "It'll be great to play in front of my parents and brother."

Greene, who picked PSU over UC-Irvine, will be reunited at Park Blocks with Southridge teammate Allie Brock, a forward.

Greene is spending the summer playing with Team Taurasi of California.

We've certainly got enough guards now, with VanBrocklin coming in. Jones will be point guard, with Lampman and Jackson backing her up. Or Greene? Or Van Brocklin? Lexi Bishop and Marchant will be 2guard. When Lanz comes in in 2011 she'll be 2guard? Lots to discover in the fall.

And by the way, Team Taurasi is the California Storm, one of 16 national Nike-sponsored prep teams that play around the country during the summer. Their "graduates" mostly move on to the Pac-10; Greene is presumably that good. I'll have to look her up.

The Big Oh even had a blurb on it.

I just realized Greene is a junior, and will be coming in as a freshman behind Lanz in 2011. That changes the equation and really builds depth into the lineup. A great recruit for Murrell.

nice get, like the mid-range game her HS coach comments on in the Oregon live link; keep it rollin Coach :D

I think this recruit in particular is a good sign that things are finally getting good-and-serious within PSU athletics.

Southridge's Allison Greene has knee surgery, expected to be out six months -- 7/28 5:26 p.m.

Southridge senior wing Allison Greene, who has committed to Portland State, is expected to miss six months after having surgery last week to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The 5-foot-9 Greene, a Class 6A third-team selection last season when she averaged 10.6 points for the state champion Skyhawks, injured the knee July 5 while scrimmaging with Southridge in preparation for the End of the Trail tournament in Oregon City.

“I just went up for a shot, and on the way up it went,” Greene said. “On the way down, it gave out. It was a non-contact injury.”

Greene said doctors initially told her the knee might have been hyperextended, but she learned the bad news after receiving MRI results on July 7.

“I was like shocked,” she said.

Dr. Mark Colville reconstructed the ACL during the surgery at Southwest Washington Medical, using a graft from part of Greene's patella tendon from the same knee. The anticipated six-month recovery would put her return sometime in the middle of January.

“But right now it's doing really well,” Greene said. “I already have like 80- to 85-degree bend, and I'm already off pain meds and stuff. We'll see how it goes, but six months is the goal.”

Greene committed to Portland State in June.

“I felt bad, like I let them down because I'm hurt,” Greene said. “It sucks, but they've stood behind me 1,000 percent. So that was a huge relief. Obviously, I don't want to rush back in four months because of the whole college thing, but things are going well so far.”

Greene began playing with Cal Storm Team Taurasi last fall and expected to join the team for AAU tournaments in Chicago, Arizona and South Carolina this month, but the injury foiled her plans.

A three-year starter and a member of two state title teams, Greene's leadership is critical to Southridge this season, especially considering the team will have a new coach after Michael Meek left for George Fox University. She is the only starter eligible to return for the Skyhawks.

“Your senior season, you want it to be like the perfect year,” she said.

sad, hard to have your senior season turn out like that. I hope she gets back in time to feel good about her last year of high school....good luck Allison.
