Almost January - Who is legit?

Hopefully the San Diego Chargers…but seriously, those are good write-ups. I’m not that tuned in to Big Sky basketball to disagree with anything. Also, it sounds like that last conference tournament slot is open. I’d like to see if Katz and the Hornets could grab it. That would be huge considering the 2 win season last year.

Weber's always legit in MBB, and Montana usually is. This year, I'd also include MSU in that discussion; I think they'll get the auto-bid. I'd like to think that the Hornets are legit, but the last couple of weeks are making the elation of beating the Beavers fade really fast. So, for now, I'll restrict it to those three.

I think Sac gets in if ISU continues to fall apart. The fact that you already beat them early on is a good sign. If the Hornets can continue to improve over the season as well win home games the season will get extended.

I didn't pick Sac to make it but I usually get em wrong. Even if Sac doesn't make it the season is a success after just 2 wins last yr. I think Sac will have 12-14 wins this yr. Its hard to predict the sky. Just look at the coaches/media polls. Their always wrong.

For me the maybes are Sac, EWU, ISU and NAU.

Your game at EWU on Thurs should be a good one.

I think its exciting to see Sac and UNC much improved in just one season. I hope Sac continues to get better. I remember Jerome had a few good teams in the conf tourney. What is the opinion of Katz so far?

Depends on whose opinion you ask. I think that very soon Katz will have a Hornet team in the Big Dance. It just won't be this year or perhaps next. Others are already ready to bail on him. To me, that's stupid, because it takes even a good coach five years to rebuild a program. And as far as I'm concerned, Katz is top notch.

I STILL think we should have taken the Delta Daily Double and signed Gina Johnson to coach the girls' team. She's just as good as Katz if not better.

So far I like what Katz is doing. He was presented with a huge challenge by taking a job that most legitimate coaches didn't want. I think we can throw out last year - he got the job late in recruiting and had to completely rebuild the roster (I think only three players returned). This year's team has much more talent and seems to come to play every game (outside of the UOP game).

The real test will be over the next few years. I would like to see a shift to recruit more high school players rather than JC transfers (but at Sac St I think you should always augment the roster with a couple transfers). The bottom line is wins, he needs to find a way to win regardless of the facilities or lack of winning history!

He is slowly bringing in the HS guys...already two of next years recruits are coming straight from the prep ranks...

Who is the second HS recruit?

You know what, there is only one signed as of now, could've of thought there was another announced signing but I think it was women's hoops; but there have been a couple of HS recruits at the past few home games on visits...so the interest in HS guys looking at us is a positive.

I agree with OldHornet. Katz does need to find a way to win regardless of the facilities. He has shown that he can land a HS recruit that can contribute immediately (Dickson) and I hope he can land some more. It will be interesting to see how far he can take this team but eventually, the facility issue will be a roadblock, and I hate to say it but there will be a ceiling to the success he can have.

I hate to keep harping about facilities when it comes to basketball, but the moment us fans and alumni become complacent and content with what we currently have is the day the vision of building and playing/watching in top of the line facilities goes away.

I think the university doesn't trust the fan base. It can step up and rent out Arco. May as well cause there's not going to be an on campus arena. As much growth as this school has experienced if that was really the plan it would have happened. I'm not crazy about the Arco idea but it's either that or Hornet Gym. Not many prep stars want to play in a HS gym, hell, they may not want to play in an empty arena either, but if you come to Sac State, those are your options.

My point is, we can commit to being big and target 3 to 5K fan base. Once we establish a consistent fan base then look to build on campus. That's what Cleveland State is doing. They play at their downtown arena, bought in 6th ranked West Virginia and lost on a layup at the buzzer. 5K at that game and an average home attendance of 1500+. They play in the Horizon League (who's heard of the Horizon League?). Granted, 1500+ is no great success story right now, but I admire the program for thinking big. They've played #5 Kentucky, #12 Kansas State and #17 Ohio State, too.

Cleveland State gets it. They are being proactive getting ranked schools on the schedule, and getting them to come to their place and draw crowds. I bet they had some recruits at that WV game too. If Sac State played a ranked team like Washington at Arco in front of 5K with some recruits on visit and a schedule taking them to Kentucky, K-State and OSU, I think Katz could work with that.

Great post williestarbuck, Cleveland State has been able to land those big name schools because they made it to the second round of the dance last year but more importantly are 47-24 combined in the last two seasons. The point is the Hornets need to win consistently to even dream of landing those big name schools. Sac State shouldn’t even consider renting Arco until they consistently pack the Hornet Gym.

Also it is important to note that although Cleveland State has managed to schedule those big name schools, they are 4-10 so far this season. Two of those wins are against non-DI schools, none against the big boys.

We were on our way in mid 80's, and when Bill Brown went upside down, the then administration put their head in a place where it was very hard to hear or see anything and just let the program flounder. We finally have the right people and I am convinced the winning will bring back fans, which will make the need for an on campus arena obvious. They wont let the cart get before the horse again.
