And the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year is....

After witnessing his poor behavior in Frisco I think he should have been voted crybaby of the year. The boy is a pathetic whiner, not coach of the year material.

Acted like an ass during the game then opened up his mouth afterwards to prove that he is. I heard his comments during the Champions Banquet the day before pretty much showed is true colors, too.

Like I said before the game, I think it was a bit premature awarding the award before the biggest game of the season, and the coaches of both teams participating are nominees.

EWU82 and Dozy Don't want to start a war on words here but I would be interested in hearing in detail what you heard or saw that leads you to consider Keeler a whiner or bad mouthing anybody or team. Except his heavy complaining about the 4th down run where they called it a 1st down and moved the chain clip, I didn't witness or hear anything else. That call didn't really lose the game because the great play of your offense before and after that play and the momentum that your 1st TD generated was enough to make it hard to stem the tide. Aside from his perceived ego I thought he was gracious in defeat considering the tremendous letdown we all felt after the shock and awe you put on.

I've watched the post-game press conferences, and I'm not really buying into the notion that Keeler was whining. He was asked flat out about the 4th and 1 call, and he disagreed with it. Not sure how else he could have answered the question.

That said, I do think it's somewhat apparent that Keeler was out-coached in the 2nd half of the championship game. IMO EWU made the correct half-time adjustments, and that was the difference in the game. Chances are that if the committee had voted after the game, the outcome would be different.

Henduster,

First of all I have to say the UD football team has my respect as do the their fans that I had the pleasure to speak to in Frisco.

I based my comments on the post game comments Coach Keeler made during a press conference. He vigorously criticized the officials for the spot of the ball. He indicated it was clear to him that Mario Brown had not advanced the ball far enough to make a first down and that this "bad spot" was the cause of the UD loss. First of all I disagree with his conclusion that the spot was wrong, from what I saw the ball indeed a foot past the down marker. Secondly, blaming the officials for the loss is wrong, the hens could have stopped us from scoring but they didn't. Additionally he had plenty of time to score after our third touchdown but couldn't. Thirdly, most conferences have rules regarding public criticism of officials but either the CAA doesn't have or enforce these rules or Keeler thinks the rules don't apply to him. Not once during the press conference did he either take responsibility for their loss other than to say "we should have put more points on the board earlier in the game", or give credit for the EWU win to the superior performance of the Eagles.

I honestly believe that his comments made him sound as if he felt that the mighty Blue Hens were entitled to the win and how dare the officials make such an egregious error giving the lowly EWU Eagles the win.

You may be right, perhaps it was just his ego talking, but out here in the polite Pacific Northwest we consider comments such as his to be a sign of a person who lacks character. A person in his position should be a humble winner and a gracious loser.

EWURanger Thanks for your response and it was a good one I might add. I totally agree that Keeler was out coached in the 2nd half and that Baldwin made the correct adjustments. Agree that they should wait until after the game for the voting but not sure how the voters felt about the other portions of the criteria such as community service etc. Guess I'd better leave this year go as I am sure that it is not the end of the world.
Great talking at you and congratulations again on a super season.

EWUGrad82 Thanks for your detailed response. Your points are well taken. Coach Baldwin acted as you said he should, a humble but gracious winner. Great team and great victory. Hope to see you again next year.

Henduster,

I too hope to see you next year in Frisco. I met a bunch of very nice Blue Hen fans and look forward to seeing them again.

Mike
