Good for ISU. Now the hard work begins. Lets hope he can win the battles off the floor as much as on it. ISU needs some fresh energy, they got it, and lets hope they don't squash it. :thumb:

First priority is keeping the roster intact. From everything I've gathered about Looney, he's got a great vibe. I hope he gets a chance to see what he can do with a talented, veteran roster.

I don't see him going too far out of his way to convince any player to stay when they have shown that they are fence sitting. He will want guys who are fully committed to him and ISU. I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but your guys in the transfer portal may already be gone and may not be wanted back. Your new coach will have his own guys he wants to bring in. Just saying...

Division 2 coach for a division 2 team... :stir:
I wouldn't knock coming from D11. One of our favorite coaches, Ron A., came out of D11. As a matter of fact, he came out with a very similar record as Looney. This guy seems like the real deal to me. It will be interesting to see if he can get players to ISU, with all of their shortcomings. This coach will need to build a fire with wet firewood.

He has a nice overall record and has been consistently successful at all of his destinations. Looks like a good hire by ISU. However, it might have been their only choice too. Honestly, it isn't a destination job. Regardless, he brings new blood, excitement, and youth to a program that has missed those things for some time. I wish him luck.

I was actually impressed with the candidate pool. I would have been happy with any of the three finalists. Phillips was very successful at North Dakota State and had an NCAA tournament win on his resume. Argenal seems like an up-and-comer from a very successful Nevada program. But I'm happy with Looney, I think he's a very good "fit" at ISU. He's been very successful at every stop, had wins over Arizona, Nevada and EWU while at Seattle Pacific, recruits the Northwest very well, and his kids graduate, which is an underrated but very important factor when you look at ISU's APR problems prior to Evans' arrival. (One thing Bill didn't get enough credit for was cleaning up the APR mess -- everyone of the kids who stayed in his program graduated.)

The ISU Athletic Department as a whole has a long hill to climb, and the challenges are well known. But sometimes you hit on a "unicorn" who can win by force of will. I'm hoping Ryan Looney is that guy for the basketball program.

He seems like a good coach. Maybe he even brings some talent from his current school to Pocatello State.

EWU hired A D3 coach with no D1 experience in Jim Hayford, and that worked out okay for them. Looks to be a good hire at ISU. I saw where Quincy Lewis from BYU was supposed to be a contender for the ISU job, but it doesn't look like he was a finalist.(?)

I think this is going to work out really well for Idaho State. I was very impressed with their final list of candidates.
I agree that ISU has made a good hire and that he has assembled a good staff. However, all of the same stumbling blocks that thwarted previous staffs are still in play. Some fans up north see their program doing a 180 degree turn toward a conf. championship. Given the situation at ISU, there may well be a long struggle ahead for that basketball program. They have no consistent practice facility, no consistent place to play their games, a community stuck in the 1950s, a small business community to contribute money, a restrictive political climate in Idaho, and a generally remote location. ISU needs to start investing in their infrastructure and community development. That place has been neglected for a long time and they have a lot of ground to make up. I wish them luck in the endeavor, but it isn't a quick fix. :coffee:
