Another Player Signed

Any one have any comments on this signing (or any others)? It looks like Katz is just filling out the roster at this point.

I cant believe that in a state of 33M people, we have to go to illinois to sign a 6-4 forward and pay out of state tuition.

We need a couple of agile 6-8, 6-9 players.

I wasn't going to say anything, because Katz deserves a chance. But, his supporters were talking about how he would recruit locally etc, but now he's trending towards the OOS players...

We'll have 8 non-California players on the roster next year thus far...

PS... After 3 years, my signature sentence is relevant again!!!

I am sure he would like to bring in more local kids but I can only imagine the pitch it would take to convince a local kid who knows the situation regarding the gym, lack of student support, lack of media recognition and playing in a conference that is known for football and not basketball.

I personally don't care where the players come from. If Katz can get the type of talent that he needs locally, great! If not, I'm fine with him going elsewhere. I just want the team to win, which it will. I want kids that graduate, (Katz already demonstrated this at Delta, where 98% of his kids received their AA degree when he was there), players that are NOT knuckleheads off the court, (which I know won't happen because Katz won't take them in the first place), and the team to win.

The Mens basketball program is about to rise to another level. And then another level that all Hornet fans will be extremely proud of.

We are on the way!!!

I was one of the biggest Katz bashers in his 1st year because he let our freshman PG go, plus a list of questionable, no, dumb coaching moves and the team was straight horrible. This year, we were somewhat respectable and actually surprising. So based on the 1 year turnaround I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. In fairness to Jenkins, I think Katz is realizing the local recruiting struggles. And even when Jenkins brought in a local kids they were studs (J. Dawson, J. Pugh, J. Eller and R. Walton--maybe a dud). I'm sure like Jenkins, he's trying, but the reality is this is still "Sac State". Katz is doing right. Go outside, and find talented kids looking to branch out, build some success and then hope you get the attention of the local kids.

Problem is, I can't figure out what he's trying to do. With Jenkins, he went after athletes, guys who got up and down the floor and pressed you everywhere. I like Carbajal (tough, athletic, IQ, can score on the perimeter), Proctor (haven't seen him play, but he's a Baltimore kid--not DC as the press would say--either way he's tough can defend and do a lot of things well), and Groom got an 80 score, 6'3'' pure PG with 4 years of eligibility--sweet). I'm just not sure about Hoffman and Veteto (Red Shirt).

Did we address needs? Well we had a lot, but here's my grade: 2 Freshmen guards, Carbajal-C+, Grooms-B. Skill Players: Only 1 Proctor-C. Perimeter Scoring: Carbajal, Hoffman-C. Post Players: 0, Veteto (Red Shirt)-F. Overall Recruiting Class- C-

PG: S. Toles-Bey, K. Groom
2G: A. Proctor, J. Carbajal
Swing: W. Jackson, J. Dickson, Hoffman
3/4 Position: D. Bjegovic
PF/C: A. N'Diaye
C: D. Lopez

This team will be small, inexperienced, and not particularly athletic. Definitely a 3 guard offense with 1 guard defending a Small Forward and a Swing defending a PF. Could probably rebound defensively with a certain line up, could probably press with a certain line up, and could have a descent 1/2 court offense with a certain line up. Should hopefully be a good ball handling team. Hopefully can get to the line and make FTs.

My prediction: I'll be a looong season, hopefully building for the following year.

I agree with EH, who cares where the recruits come from, so long as they can play well, stay eligible and stay out of trouble is all that matters.

Good assessment willie, however I have to think that Duro will be used as a power forward. He has the size for it, his post game just needs to be developed. Unless the new recruits prove otherwise, we won't have the talent at guard to run a 3 guard set imo. Dickson created some mismatches and fits for opposing defenses. I'm not sure if that would hold true if he was put in as a 3rd guard type of role. I would think Katz will redshirt one of the freshman guards, but if they are athletic enough, I have no problem with either of them getting some playing time throughout the season. I'm more concerned about someone filling the void at center left by the graduation of Eller as a presence in the paint will be crucial in determining the success of the Katz style of offense. If Alpha or Lopez can step up and contribute at center and another guard can provide some consistent play alongside TB, I think we will have a good chance at a .500 season.

I agree with you on Duro, SD. He's probably a 4 but i'll let him face the basket too. I wouldn't redshirt the guards. We dont have a backup point (Grooms) and we need perimeter scoring (Carbajal). I'd throw the 2 Freshmen in the fire and let them learn each other, then hope it pays dividends down the road. Duro isn't as physical as Eller but I feel he can be as effective in other ways, especially if he continues to improve offensively and becomes a stronger defensive rebounder. I'm with you on N'Diaye and Lopez, man, it would be huge if they both can step up. I just feel our lack of size and inexperience will be too much to overcome. But on the positive, with Dickson, Carbajal and Grooms, a good foundation is slowly being laid.
