Anti-football??

I'm not normally one who likes to attack anyone from our EWU, especially from administration, but there is a person working on the inside who is continuing to prove that she's anti football and flat out of touch with the direction the EWU is moving. Lee Ann Case has made several head shaking moves in recent years but lately, she has made comments that are incredible and make me speechless! :ohno:

-she has done nearly everything to limit the tailgating scene on game days
-she has voiced loud and clear that's she's against expanding the stadium
-and lastly and most recently, she wants to bring an end to the homecoming parade

These are just a few of the breathtaking comments that he has made that deal with football. I've not even mentioned the other things that she's brought an end to on campus like the MMA fights that were supposed to come to campus last year that would have been an amazing event for the campus...

As a fan base, we need to be aware of this person and keep a close eye on these things. If she had it her way, the football program would have been dead just a few years ago.

You should supply an email address and her title to the masses if it's that out of control. I'm sure many of us plunk down more $$$ to the university than she does, and thus have a MUCH LOUDER VOICE.

Plus, Eastern has always had scornful academic-types who think athletics are garbage and contrary to the mission of the university. Hell, every university has one or two of these vocal idiots... they masquerade under the banner of academic principle, stoppage underage drinking, getting abusive athletes off campus, or whatever else the cause du juor might be... Really, I've found most of them just think less athletic money means more in their coffers, or in a more sinister turn, don't like the diversity athletics bring by attracting large numbers of students of color.

Additionally, expanding the stadium is being done with private monies, not public funds. It makes no sense to oppose it. Again, if what you're saying is true (and I have no idea who she is...), she's probably just making a money grab or has a latent issue with students of color and just sort of takes it out on a program that is very diverse in it's ethnic makeup.

Ehhhhhh.... I wouldn't say "diversity" plays too big of a role. Most academics pride themselves in being especially UNracist. That seems too be a significant stretch.

I will cede that EWU has a problem with an anti athletic sentiment. I remember while I was playing, I'd ask students why they didn't go to football games. Most of the time the answers were along the lines of "maybe if we won." Keep in mind that we went to the playoffs 3 of the 5 years I served. I also recall their being a significant amount of resentment coming from some club participants (namely rugby and hockey players) for the disparate amount of cash/attention the football program received over their bullshit club.

I agree that every university will face problems with anti-athleticism coming from the academic side. Indeed, Washington Street has been a significant divide at EWU for a long time, and will continue to be so. But thanks to our recent success and tireless effort from Chaves, Pam Parks and Dr. Arevello, that gap has steadily closed.

Hopefully now that more students are on board, the tides will change, and the administration will realize that a rising tide raises all ships. One need not look further than the enrollment jump after our National Championship.

However, I reject your nothion that any faculty member at Eastern Washington University would actively seek to damage a department or program due to its inclusion of people from any range of diverse backgrounds.

LDopaPDX,
I do my best to ignore personnel of this type. I knew when I worked for 21 years, the same type of behavior was conducted towards the "Athletic Dept". When I joined EAA 2000, I couldn't believe how some of the Big Wigs hated Athletics. I have been retired 17 years 08/31/12, and this crab still goes on.

I remembered during the Remodeling the Field, a Female came in from a trip, I tried to explain how beautiful the field would look, she got very upset, (for better words), and commence to rattle off how the University is wasting money, and the students could use the money better. Once I heard her hell raising, I quietly got into my vehicle, sat down and watch the progress of "ROOS Field. Good luck to her, let us all wish her the best of luck. :( :(

NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS:(Different Subj.)
Checked out the progress of Scoreboard, three of the 4 posts have been painted, they looks outstanding. Tomorrow some of the metal for the board should start getting installed. One week from this Saturday is the Griz Game. Vic

FYI, I play the race card here because it fits. A lot of these people fly the banner of diversity in tone only, but can't stand a program that actually succeeds in it's mission of attracting people of different colors. Seriously, if she is opposed to athletics (and again, I don't know the woman so I can't tell you for sure), then she is opposed to the department that probably has the most success at bringing in racial minorities. Whether this is her primary goal or just "collateral damage" from another purpose is sort of irrelevant. Do away with athletics and you do away with one of the primary avenues a lot of minority students use to pay for college.

I don't care about her motives, the end result if she got her way- again, assuming what the OP says is true- is a lot of damage done to the diversityy of the university.

To All,
Today most of the Players departed for home after practice. Zylstra is going to Oregon Elk Hunting. I told him he probarbly hit an Elk (in you know where, ladies present   )

I don't have to tell any of you, these young men are so respectable. I was told when they doesn't see myself and my daughter, they worried some sickness in the family, I explain the gas prices are to "damn high", so I must cut back on some trips ;) ;).Andru his brother and Cousin left for the West Side, told them to have a safe trip, and come back safely. Got to go, time for "DINNER" Be Cool. Vic

I certainly didn't post this topic as a reason to bring up any racial issues. It was simply to point out a specific person among administration who wants to hault any progress that the football program is making and we should actively remind administration that this program is very important to te growth of this university through school spirit and future attractiveness for students.

This morning as I was walking out of a coffee shop here in Bozeman and an elderly gentleman wearing a Gonzaga sweatshirt (yes it was cold over here) was going in. Made me think of how bball has given the Gonzaga name national recognition by virtue of their athletic success'. Recognition they would not have because of the nice Jesuit education students receive or the law school but largely because of athletics.

The same could be said for Boise State or the University of Miami (people of a certain age can remember when The U wasn't much more of a presence than say a Central Washington). Athletics, football in particular, raised the profile of these institutions and allowed them to grow the rest of their programs as they saw their enrollment, alumni, and subsequent endowments increase.

LeeAnn Case is a season ticket holder to EWU volleyball, football and basketball. She has been prior to 2008 when I joined as ticket manager and has her season tickets into next year. She also brings family and friends to the game.

I’ve known LeeAnn Case for years as an employee and as a student. We may have not seen eye to eye on things, but cancelling athletics ain’t one of them.

This comment string is a stretch.

Tailgating issues have to deal with complaints over lack of $5 parking. Our EWU folks like to complain and never paid for anything. You want to go after someone about this? Go after our crap alumni base who doesn’t join EAA or thinks buying season tickets are for suckers.

They didn’t like it when we sold out 3 of 4 games last season either. As if I was supposed to hold tickets for people to randomly show up.

Eagle alumni are the cheapest creatures on earth.

In terms of the other activities such as MMA fights & homecoming parades, etc., that’s a student-funded deal overseen by Student Affairs. If they don’t want to hold it, they don’t have to. It’s their deal not a publicly funded event (therefore, you don’t get a vote), the students can change that if they so choose. The MMA thing also had a large insurance issue that no one wanted to cover (rates were huge).

Is there a way to have everyone here agree that putting people’s emails up with unproven accusations is probably a wrong-headed move? It just leads, in my opinion, to a negative reflection on the athletic department and its programming, despite the intentions of the commenter.

Thanks,

Troy Kirby ‘05
Former EWU Athletic Ticket Manager

I'd have to agree... Much of this seems to be more heresay than anything and shooting from the hip and sending e-mails based on a message board rumor doesnt do any favors.

Hopefully season ticket sales were up as a result of people not getting tickets. and I'm sure that helps support the argument for a much needed stadium expansion.

But in any university there is always going to be an anti athletic crowd. Just gotta deal with it but from an outside perspective things seem to only be on the up with EWU and if there truly were a huge backlash against athletics I doubt there would be as much support for the stadium expansion as we've seen.

To All,
Let me make one thing clear. When I spoke about "Big Wigs" were down on Athletic Dept in my time at EWU, I didn't know any of the personnel. I doesn't know the Facultymember that I spoke about coming back off the trip. You noticed I didn't put the department she is assigned to, because I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. I didn't mention anything of Racial Motivations. Noone said I mentiioned it, just want to clear the air.  :notworthy: :notworthy:

Regardless of what anyone says about personnel, I will always utilize my own mind to make a decision, hope others will do the same. Be Cool. Vic
