Anyone see the scrimmage?

It was good to see the Hornets on the field. There were some nice defensive, running, and kicking plays. Additionally the coaching staff demonstrated a high level of intensity. I didn't see a lot of passing. The only pass we did see was incomplete. I was only there for a half hour before I had to go do "honey do's."

Go Hornets!

FOOTBALL USES BALANCED ATTACK ON OFFENSE, BIG PLAYS ON DEFENSE IN FINAL SCRIMMAGE

8/29/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Hornet offense scored three touchdowns and the defense forced a pair of turnovers during the final scrimmage for the Sacramento State football team, Saturday morning at Hornet Stadium.

Sophomore Terrance Dailey carried the ball 10 times for 58 yards and a touchdown to lead the ground attack. Dailey shared time with Evander Wilkins, Sam McCowan, Kenslow Smith and Jake Croxdale during the controlled scrimmage which lasted approximately 90 minutes. Wilkins opened the game with a 7-yard scamper and then immediately followed with an 8-yard run before being stopped at the line on his final carry. Dailey saw each of his 10 attempts go for positive yardage, including a 17-yard run around the left side of the line to start the second series. He scored from 1-yard out for the lone rushing touchdown.

Junior Jason Smith started the game at quarterback and completed all five of his attempts for 31 yards. John Loeliger and McLeod Bethel-Thompson each took turns under center as well. Loeliger was 2-of-3 for 13 yards while Bethel-Thompson finished 5-of-9 for 50 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Eleven Hornet receivers caught at least one pass and only Dylan Lane and Wilkins caught two. Lane was the top yardage gainer with 18 yards on back-to-back catches. Highly-touted junior college transfer Brandyn Reed made his Sacramento State debut with one catch for seven yards. The team's lone touchdown reception came from James Bobak who hauled in a 17-yard pass from Bethel-Thompson in the middle of the end zone.

Defensively, redshirt freshman Avery White made big plays on the first three drives. White sacked Jason Smith on 3rd-and-8 to halt the first series. He sacked Loeliger on third down to thwart the second drive before forcing McCowan to fumble on the third series. The fumble was eventually gathered up by junior safety Zach Schrader. Sophomore Marquese Smith picked off Bethel-Thompson for an interception. Bethel-Thompson was attempting to hit a receiver 50 yards down the middle of the field.

"Honestly, I thought we were a little sloppy," Sacramento State head coach Marshall Sperbeck said. "On the positive, Terrance Dailey is continuing to make improvement and McLeod played his best scrimmage with us. He has now put together back-to-back good practices.

"Like every team in the country, we're ready to play someone else," Sperbeck continued. "Camp gets long and you get tired of hitting each other."

The scrimmage closed out training camp as the team will turn to its regular season schedule on Monday when the University begins its fall semester. Sacramento State plays its season opener at UNLV on Sat., Sept. 5, at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: The Hornets donned their new jerseys for the first time on Saturday. The home jersery remain green but have only white trim with "Hornets" above the numbers across the front of the chest. The road jerseys are the opposite with a white background and green numbers and text. Both jerserys will be worn with white pants … Every available player saw action during the scrimmage … Kicker Chris Diniz made his one field goal try from 28 yards … McCowan returned a kickoff nearly 85 yards to inside the 10.
