APR

APR: Academic Progress Rates. AD Leadership seems to have dealt with that challenge well. Kudos to them. I believe it was a case of the right hire, Rashad Floyd (Mr. Heart-&-Hustle), who is deserving of at least as much praise. May this issue never rear its ugly head again at PSU+OHSU again.

What is Floyd's role? I was not aware that he had any formal position with the team.

Rashad Floyd
Academic Advisor

Rashad Floyd joined the Portland State Athletics program in October 2009 as an academic advisor for student-athletes.

Since coming to PSU, Floyd has also pioneered the "GPS" Life Skills program for Viking student-athletes. G.P.S., which stands for Goals, Progress and Success, is designed to help student-athletes have two successful transitions: to college-level student-athletes (emphasis on student) and from being dependent to independent adults, as well as preparation for life after college.

Floyd works as an academic advisor for the football and track and field programs.

An alum of Portland State, Floyd was a star cornerback in the Viking football program (1997-2000). He was a two-time first-team All-Big Sky Conference selection and a third team All-American as a senior. Floyd ranks third all-time in interceptions at Portland State (16).

Following his career at Portland State, Floyd spent eight years in the Arena Football League, where he was an All-Star.

Floyd, and his wife Kiauna (a former PSU softball player), recently became parents to a baby girl.

I have to believe that he's been a big part of this APR turnaround.

Rashad is a model to all PSU alums and students (and current student-athletes). The right man for the right job. This was truly an inspired choice for hire. A true example of what Viking Spirit means in Oregon. And he looks good on TV, never at a loss for words or relevance. GPS? What a tremendous contribution.
