Arkansas Pine Bluff is a D1 program out of the SWAC. They are 0-10 so far, but have played a brutal schedule with only one home game so far. Air Force beat them by only 10 points and OSU beat them by 20 something. It looks like they stay with teams for a while. They play Fresno State Wednesday night, before playing us on Saturday.

On paper, we should win easily. However, with our two starting big men out with injuries, it could be a lot closer than one might think. I'm thinking that this will be a competitive game. Our freshmen and sophomores will get tested.

At least they are DI. This is after all, is what the department could afford for a guarantee. We complain about home schedules constantly, and so money was found to buy a game. This is who we were able to buy. If anything, the game is happening at a time when both Braxton and Chapman could be out and so playing a bad team, who is DI, is good.

Chapman being out may be a good thing. I have yet to figure out what type of game he is trying to play. We showed more more heart, chemistry and toughness in 40 minutes at the Vivint than we have shown the rest of the season combined. Interesting that we fought so much harder without two of our biggest bodies. I just hope it is something that gets figured out quickly with him.

I'm not sure what the contract is like. It could be a home and home, or it could be something else.

What I do know is that they are a better team than their record would indicate. All but one of their games have been on the road and they have played some good teams quite close. This game will not be a cake walk.

Like you said, everyone likes to gripe about not bringing in other D1 programs to play in the Dee. To complain about this one would be out of line with what we have all been saying. I'm happy to see our coaches reaching out in this manor. :coffee:

Peperdine next. Also, this Prersentation club recently had one of our BSC teams on the ropes, UND finally did beat them by 7. They must be a lot better than last year.

In one of the "Ask the AD" episodes, I thought that Jerry said that we had successfully, for the first time, created a guarantee game with a DI team. Only team on our schedule that would fit with is Arkansas Pine Bluff.

In that case, it looks like Pine Bluff is putting together a war trust for the future of their program. They have been everywhere. Very ambitious.

A couple of schools have picked up that model. I think it is Texas State or Texas Southern, who play most of their OOC on the road. They stay at the best hotels and try to travel to different parts of the country. Their coach feels it is a great chance to help his players experience the country and the various cultures that come from those areas. Most of his kids have never traveled before. I was talking to a buddy about it and he and I felt that that model wouldn't work well for Weber but for small DI schools that don't have much of a following and need to generate revenue to help the program survive, then it is great.

Weber wins going away. Final score, 96-74.

Harding left the game with 30 points and 11 minutes left to play, Braxton sat a lot due to foul trouble, and Chapman in a boot. We were up 32 when the bench was emptied.

APB is one of the most athletic teams I have seen at the Dee. Their problem was that they only had two guys who looked to be threats to score. They had some 6'8'' to 6'10'' guys, but they were skinny. They had a couple of guys who could play for us. They are a much better team than their record indicates. I can see why Air Force only beet them by 10. It was a fun game to watch. :thumb:

Ha! They were really skinny!

Just want to let Tal know that we played zone for about 7 or 8 minutes in the second half. Also Court only played some garbage minutes at the end, but he is clearly getting his legs back.

I predict that we will see more zone this year than any other year under Randy. I also predict that Court will get more minutes as the season progresses and that he will contribute more in BSC games. He is beginning to show the pop he had in HS. :coffee:

There are two things about Saturday's game that I think the Cats could have done better. First, the defense, for the most part was fine, but at other times it was really soft. Weber has to get better on the defensive side of the court. Pirate (you kill me brother! You are awesome! by the by, the member formerly known as catcat is scheduled to make an appearance at the Dee, keep your eyes pealed for him), I was shocked to see zone being played. If you have multiple weapons, you can do multiple things. I don't understand why Randy has never practiced multiple defenses. Yet, he can argue that his man is all he needs based off of record. Regardless, I fill we allowed the pine bluffs to score too many points.

Next, I was unhappy with some of the TOs. But, the nice thing is that the team is cutting down on those and really getting to the point where they are meshing on O.

A couple of observations on the D; We played more up tempo than we have for a long time, especially in the second half, we pulled up for threes on the break, we often took shots very early in the shot clock, we played long stretches with 3 or more underclassmen on the floor, and #23, McSomething, was making some heavily contested shots from 25 ft. With the tempo we were playing, you will get more shots and give up more shots. I thought our D was okay, not stellar, but okay. :coffee:

That I will do. Looking forward to catching up with that world traveller and his wife.

I was impressed with Dallas. That's the first time I've seen him this year. I thought he passed out of the double teams well and he showed some good moves around the basket. I think he will end up giving Weber some good minutes off the bench.

I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg with Dallas and Kozak. With Braxton being a bit foul happy, it really helps to have a little depth. It will be even better when Chapman gets back. For now, our underclassmen are getting some needed minutes on the floor. It may help us in late February and March. I also like how our freshmen guards are rounding out.

I agree that Dallas has improved to a point. I think, on offense, he has come a long ways. However, on defense he is slow and seems to being a really tentative rebounder. He doesn't really like to mix is up.

SWAC teams are a combined 8-101, and 6 of it's 10 teams are winless. :yikes: That's winning 7% of the time. But at least they're "athletic".
