Interesting article by Bradley. There is a lot I agree and disagree with.
Throw out Katz’s first three seasons as Hornets coach; 2011-12 should be considered his first season as Hornets coach. That’s because the just concluded 10-victory season will be known as the real baseline for Katz’s teams.
This is just ridiculous and insulting. I agree this his first season shouldn’t be held against him (he was hired late into the recruiting season and just found bodies to fill out a roster in his first class) but to say his 2nd and 3rd year shouldn’t be held against him is absurd. This season is very comparable to Katz’ second year. In his second year (2009-10), the Hornets won 9 games (2 of them non-D1) and had some key returning players going into season 3 (2010-11). This season is very comparable in that the Hornets won 10 games (2 of them non-D1) and will return more key players for next season. I use his second season as the baseline, why season 4 should be considered the baseline and the previous 2 seasons shouldn’t be considered is just inaccurate. The only glaring difference between season 2 and 4 are BSC wins (2 vs 5).
All of those factors show the Hornets now understand Katz’s system. They get what he’s trying to teach. And his demanding style is producing more results than Jenkins, who seemed to subscribe to the Guy Lewis School of basketball – throw the ball on the court and watch the kids play pickup games during practice.
I agree Jenkins had no real strategy or coaching acumen when it came to X’s and O’s, but his style produced more results than Katz’ over a comparable time frame. Here is the side by side comparison of the two results of the coaching styles:
Jenkins: ’00-’08 Record: 80-147 (37-81 BSC)
- • 2000-01: 5-22 (2-14)
• 2001-02: 9-19 (3-11)
• 2002-03: 12-17 (5-9)* BSC Tournament Win
• 2003-04: 13-15 (7-7)* BSC Tournament Appearance
• 2004-05: 12-16 (8-6)* BSC Tournament Appearance
• 2005-06: 15-15 (5-9)* BSC Tournament Win
• 2006-07: 10-19 (5-11)
• 2007-08: 4-24 (4-14)
Katz: ’08-Pres Record: 28-87 (13-49 BSC)
- • 2008-09: 2-27 (1-15)
• 2009-10: 9-21 (3-13)
• 2010-11: 7-21 (4-10)
• 2011-12: 10-18 (5-11)
Jenkins had the Hornets in the BSC Tournament 2 times in his first 4 years, and one of those appearances featured a BSC Tournament win. Conversely in Katz’ 3rd and 4th year the Hornets started BSC play with a stellar 0-8 run, meaning they were almost out of it half way through conference play.
In case you don’t remember, Sac State basketball had hit rock bottom when Jenkins was let go after a 4-24 season. His teams were undisciplined, his rotations were unpredictable and his recruiting was unproductive. The cupboard was so bare that Katz had to fill a 2008-09 roster with junior-college transfers just to win two games.
This whole statement is filled with fail. I’d consider Katz’ first season rock bottom (2-27) for this program but again I don’t hold that against him, after all one of those wins was against the farm extension. While Bradley was at the Sac Bee ignoring Hornet athletics, he is obviously unaware of the talent Jenkins recruited to this program and the excitement on campus that resulted from it. Pugh, Bausley, Freeman, Harris, Leath…the list of exciting and talented players is long and distinguished. The excitement these guys generated was so high that it resulted in a student approved on-campus events center that unfortunately never found funding. The Nest was constantly filled and loud, both of which rarely occur under Katz' brand of hoops.
I also seem to remember Katz inheriting a couple of Jenkins carry-overs who had solid Hornet careers and solid contributions for both coaches (Leath & Eller) so the cupboard wasn’t complete bare as Bradley mistakenly claims. A little research into the program history and performance would have been worth the time before spouting off such inaccuracies about the previous regime.
Katz said his recruiting priorities include two post players to replace senior Josh McCarver and departed Walter Jackson. and wants two “slasher/scorers” to fill the four scholarships he has open. He would enjoy it if one of those scorers was a point guard because he wants to get Garrity more rest. Plus, the Hornets should have a healthy Joe Estrada back for his senior season after playing most of this season with a severe foot injury.
Next season hinges on a solid recruit class this off season. There are some good players returning next season but I wouldn’t expect a big difference in results next season if Katz fails on the recruiting trail. Defense needs to be addressed, the Hornets are just giving up too much here and we saw that when Jackson left the team. As Bradley pointed out, depth at center will be needed as well. I’ll go into more detail when I release my hoops season recap in the coming weeks.
