Attendance...future plans?

*Disclaimer, I am a Montana fan* (born and raised in Montana)

First off I wish there was a way to improve attendance for PSU games.

Obviously hillsboro stadium is not the answer. What do you guys think?

-If PSU had a smaller 10,000 seat stadium (or whatever the conference minimum is)
-If they could get Providence park to block off the upper seats to force people down?
-More students living on campus with football stadium more easily accessible?

I know PSU is landlocked, but I personally would love to see a smaller venue for PSU. Similar to Cal Poly's setup?

Or if PSU made the jump to the FBS because the potential to sell more tickets with teams that might draw more interest?

What do you guys think?

Y'know, you can be a PSU fan, even if you were raised in Montana. I was. And to answer your next question, I was neither a Cat or a Griz when I lived there (and constantly being asked that is similar to being asked if I am a Duck or Beaver out here :D ).

Any move to the FBS would mean that PSU would have to guarantee an average of 15000 fans per home date within two years. For me, it is a moot point because anything less than a move to the Pac-12 would generate the same level of interest as the Vikings have now. Duck/Beav fans in Portland believe that there is only one DI level of football and that is Pac-12. Anything less (Mtn West, Sun Belt, WAC, Big Sky) is below them.

An idea of a smaller venue for PSU football would need two things, location and money, and PSU has neither right now. Hillsboro is good for a replacement but it is 20 miles from campus (an urban commuter campus) and is not on a bus route or MAX. If the students think Providence Park is hard to get to, try getting them to Hillsboro.

My order of allegiance go's like this.

-Montana (A few friends played for Montana, and my uncle played here)
-Montana State (Friendly fun rivalry, between Montana)
-Portland State (I work downtown and I walk through campus on my lunch most days. Love watching the lineman push the sleds)

If I watch FBS... I pull for the Beavers...so sick of DUCK fans (Granted, Montana fans are the equivalent of Duck fans in the Big Sky, so my apologies)

Im flat out impressed by NDSU... hate em or love em, Im impressed at the caliber of that program.

What I meant was keeping PSU near campus seems like a better idea vs being farther away. It also ticks me off that they are trying to pressure PSU to not be able to play games there... PSU can't get any love.

If only we get PSU to play several Saturday night games... Maybe generate some interest, maybe a Friday night game here and there?

It just sucks that there is quality football coming into Portland so often and people are missing out... PSU has to many things working against them...So believe me I am pulling for PSU to have success.

I will be rooting for Montana State and Montana when the visit this year, but Ill be sure to tip my hat if you pull the upset. Certainly is frustrating to play a home game with when more opposing fans show up.

Can't wait for the FCS season to start... oh and the rest of college football.

Hoping PSU Steals a win in Pullman and kicks EWU's teeth in.

-Cheers

Thanks for your friendly contribution. There are other benefits to playing at Providence. The seats are comfy. Its a cool venue (if only we could fill it). The beer, Key Bank section, and urban location by the Max makes it unique in the BSC. Lots of different seat vantage points to choose from.

Stringing together two or three .800+ seasons would do wonders for attendance. Add to that an offense that fills the air with footballs and we fill a few more seats. Picking a time for the kickoff and sticking with it would help a lot too. Also, in a peace-march prone city at a non-ROTC program University, why oh why does our football team dress-up like a bunch of GI Joe dolls. If we a too poor for new, try to pick up some hand-me-down uniforms from Nike U.

I've wondered this as well. When I first saw them, it was a bit of a head scratcher. EWU I would get since they have a military science department. However, it's a trend that is in, so there's that. Also I've heard that they have been one of the more popular looks amongst our players.

Providence Park is much more accessible than anything else in the immediate area for DI football. The obvious solution if money was no object would be to build a football stadium where the Stott Community Field is, but that wouldn't work for a host of reasons besides money. The real way to build attendance is to win a lot of games and get the causal fans into the stands. There's really no draw for PSU games as a home fan unless you went there, attend there, or are a family member of someone who did. Casual fans typically don't support middling to mediocre teams, which is why minor FBS teams like Idaho, FIU, and some of those schools can't fill their own stadiums despite competing for bowl bids, and they own/operate those venues.

I don't agree that anything less than Pac-12 wouldn't generate additional interest. In my view, the Mountain West would still be a big enough step up that media and additional casual fans would show support. Not to mention, the opponents would be more likely to travel fans and boost visiting attendance.
