Attracting Rural Type to Portland State

Tyrone Holmes opted for MT simply because he said he was more comfortable with its "more rural setting."

We have "more rural settings" within easy reach of Portland State. He doesn't need to live in the city per se. I know there is a rich variety of rural settings in Clackamas County and Washington County. I bet there are some even in well-populated Multnomah County as well.

Find out what his needs are, match him up with the right kind of rural setting and then remind him how damn bitter cold it gets out in the great white northern hinterlands of MT. Then do an imitation of a bit of a strong wind to emphasize the wind chill. Frozen hands and feet.

We have great deer hunting here all around. Well-watered and temperate climate. If he's looking for bigger game, we drive out and go after it. We have lots of appeal for those looking for "more rural settings."

I'm not surprised that he opted for UM. You have very valid points, but when it comes down to it, we are what we are, and they are what they are. We're an urban university that strives to 'Let Knowledge Serve the City.' The kid is from Eagle Point, so finding common ground between PSU and UM, we'll be on the losing end of that every time. What he's used to is a 40 minute drive at PSU. What he's used to at UM is probably a 4 minute walk away.
