I'll start out by saying what's the definition of "salvage"? Play better and win a few games? Yes, I I believe they will do this. Win out, make the playoffs and get to that level of "salvage"...no.
NAU goofed up badly on two plays last Saturday (long UM reverse for a touchdown and the long run by Canada in the 4th for a Griz rush td after bottling the play up in the backfield) and it cost them the game. The turnovers and costly penalties from previous Big Sky games were not present. Other than the total rushing yardage and the final score, NAU finished statistically better than UM across the board. But only the final score counts. I never saw a shred of "quit" on the field and was proud of the Lumberjacks. I think this season is what happens when nearly a whole defense has to be replaced.
