Baby Hayford & The Crying Eagles

This Saturday we have the privilege of welcoming the Big Sky's biggest baby to the Dee Event Center. The baby was exceptionally cranky last Saturday when the crying eagles played Montana. The baby received the leagues first technical foul of the conference season and it looked like he was on his way to being put in time out. Someone should bring the baby a really big pacifier so he will stop crying and whining all game.

Next to BJ at North Dakota, he is my favorite coach to watch and taunt. Should be a fun game as always.

You would be crying too, if you had to wear that jacket.

And, live in a place called Cheney. :wtf:

And, coach a team who's mascot is an egg laying animal.

Agree 100%. Heyford and BJ are the absolute worst about bitching about EVERY call. And Humpty Dumpty was at the top of his game last week. It was so bad that even Eastern fans were complaining about him at the game, and a few did so on their board after it.

Look, we all know BSC officiating is crap. But when you whine, bitch and moan at every call, even when they gotta bring a stretcher onto the court to scrape up what was left of an opponent after an Eastern foul, you sorta lose all credibility.

It's not BSC officiating any more. Now the problem is that the best refs get to pick where they want to go. We are getting them in Ogden, primarily due to our close proximity to other D1 schools and an international airport 30 minutes away. My guess is that the least experienced guys are ending up in the hinterlands of the BSC. We ran into that a bit up in Montana. The call at the end of regulation, that nearly gave the game to the Griz, was made by one of the most Junior refs in the consortium. The other two guys there were solid.

Can't say I'm the biggest Brian Jones fan. Though there seems to be quite a few coaches like that in basketball. Iowa's coach walked off the court when we played them. His team looked so confused, like they wanted to go shake hands, but had to follow the coach.

Only reason I don't want to see Jones get canned (yet) is he seems to have recruited some decent talent, and I'd hate to lose those guys. BUT, if he can't win the Big Sky tourney this year, I think his time has run its course at UND.

I'm not saying that UND will not win in Reno, I'm just saying that it is a long road and there are 4 or 5 teams that could win if they get hot at the right time. There could be a little luck involved. I'm not sure that luck is what you want to base firing a coach over. Just sayin'. :coffee:

Red Face, Foot Stomp and Lurch are three of my favorite coaches to watch during games. I've never seen them actually coach a game. All they do is ride the refs for 40 mins. Foot Stamp = Hayford is the best. His whole head goes red after almost every call and I'm shocked that he hasn't had a Jones Fracture due to his extreme stomping.

Agreed, UND is by no means a lock to win in Reno. I don't think anyone is at this point. I think UND has the talent to win, but has not played to their potential and has shown a ton of inconsistency. Smoke NDSU in Fargo, then get smoked by NDSU at home. Play a tight game against NAU, then Smoke SUU.

BJ is on this ice because of his performance over the course of time at UND, not just based on this year's performance. He has had talented teams in the past, but can never get it done. Add in his courtside antics which can sometimes be understandable, but are often embarassing. I read on our forum that BJ is 4-43 in road non-conference games since 2008 (not including tournament games, of which I don't believe we have ever won any). That is pretty much fire-able right there.

I'm not positive, but I am pretty sure Jones is in the last year of his contract, and barring a very successful season, he may not be back.

If road non-conference record alone was reason to fire someone then every coach in the Big Sky would be on the hot seat, including Rahe.

4 wins since 2008! C'mon man, that horrific. Weber had 4 just last year.

Let's flip the question, what has Jones done since 2008 to warrant him keeping his job? 1 good year where he went to the BSC Tourney finals. Other than that ....

I guess the bigger question is, can UND get a better coach than BJ, that falls within their price range.

Weber had exactly 0 true road OOC wins last season. In fact before this season's road win at Utah St the last one was in March of 2013. Rahe is 9-45 in D1 OOC road games (only slightly better than Jones). Believe me, this is a sore spot for a lot of Weber fans. I'm just saying, if Big Sky coaches were judged on OOC play alone, especially OOC road games, then they all suck and all would be fired. Play well in conference and you'll probably keep you job.

Let is be known...foot stamp Hayford is now known as Thumper Hayford.

So...Eastern can score, but defensively, they are soft. We are one of the best defensive teams in the conference and the best defending the perimeter. Thumper will need his players to beat us in transition on by driving and cutting. I just don't think they are quick enough to do that. I'm expecting them to come out in a half-court trap or full-court and play a lot of zone. Man to man...they just aren't quick enough.

This Weber team is playing with a level of confidence I haven't seen in a Weber team in a long time. Everyone is jelling and in sync with each other.

Let's continue our romp through the Big Sky tomorrow against one of our top competitors for the crown

EWU has more scoring threats than UI, is bigger than UI, and may handle the ball a bit better. However, they are not as deep, they are slower, and they don't defend near as well. ISU gave them a run for their money in Poky last night. I like the fact that they were pushed and we got a lot of rest.

Tomorrow could be a high scoring affair. Although, I expect us to throw an intense D against them. We played a little zone against UI and it seemed to work well. We may see a little of that against EWU.

I thought the officiating was consistent last night. It is odd that they are so keen to call the hand checking on the hips, but will let a forearm to the face go as just part of play. Interesting to say the least. Tells a lot about what the preseason training and instruction was all about this year. Next year the point of interest might be the forearm to the face or the elbow to the back of the head of a player going for a layup. It's hard for them to look at more than one thing at a time. :coffee:

BSC officiating is crap everywhere, including Ogden. Sac, noco, eastern, PSU all have international airports and other conferences nearby and it certainly sucks in those places too.

It's not BSC officiating. Officiating will never ben perfect. This is the most consistent it has ever been. Teams need to adjust. Those that do will fare better.

Is this Harford guy worse than Grayson Allen? That guy sure is a piece of work!
I know it's already Saturday but it sure would be nice to see a real student section again.
I have only seen 1 or 2 games this year with what could be considered a 'student' section.
What I'd like to see is students harassing this guy like the old days when PSU star, Waters was playing. That poster with all the PSU 'criminal offenses' was classic!
Here's an idea...how about the students all having pacifiers every time Harford touches the ball. Idea #2: a GIANT pacifier somewhere in the lower bowl area so he could see it even when he's riding the bench. :twocents:
