Just got the message from Mike Lund. Announced to the team a short time ago.

Good to hear that a contract has been reached.

I'm just a little nervous about the length, though. A lot of these long-term deals blow up in the schools' face, and PSU can ill afford another one of those.

I have to agree with DustRunner. Seems like a lot of years based on the outcomes of only four games. But, in regards to Viking football, I am a pessimist of long standing. I hope for the best but expect the worst.

Its a roll of the dice for sure in regards to his contract, but in my opinion after watching the team in practice on occasion the past three years, and after seeing how things went the first few games of this season, Coach Barnum is worth it. He and the team seem to be on something special!

Seems to me to be a risky roll of the dice as well. 3 year contract would have been plenty at this point. I think everyone was pretty enamored with Nigel Burton after his second season and he was given a 5 year contract. That didn't turn out. Hope Barney is not a flash in the pan. Hate to admit to having a bit a cynicism/hesitancy being a follower of PSU football.

Having said that, I will be rooting for Coach Barnum to be the most successful PSU coach ever.

I suppose that means they're trying to pre-empt Barnum jumping ship after 2-3 successful seasons. Well, we'll see. You're right that we long-time Viking fans are a tad cynical.

Its also a testament to those who think the program is on life-support, to tie up the coach for five years shows optimistic reasoning (a good thing). Rumors abound that someone was going to make a run at Barnum if we didn't lock him up. Idaho State, heck even Duck fans started to think of ways to get him to Eugene.

What a great day for PSU football! There is momentum for the first time in as long as I can remember.

I have to admit, I was very vocal in my initial reaction of "How the **** do we let an interim AD fire our coach and basically keep the assistants around on an interim basis. The program can't survive this way!" Now, Valery Cleary gets my vote for AD of the year.

Anyone know the dollar amount? I sure hope Barnum is getting a decent raise.

When I saw the reaction of the players when it was announced that Barnum would be around for 5 years any fears I had were put aside. These players were not just clapping and giving it the "great job coach".

They were jumping up and down, laughing, showing that they indeed love Barnum. 5 years is great. He is a Vancouver native (Portlanders love people from here that succeed) He is relatively young, but not too young. If he continues to build his program his way this will be looked on as a great move.

I think it is a great hire by PSU.

As for the 5 year contract, it is fairly common length and is almost a must in recruiting. Kids want to know the coach who is recruiting them will be there the 4 to 5 years they will be there. It also shows stability in the program and commitment by the admin. That is really important for PSU because I am sure opposing coaches have been whispering in recruits ears that PSU may drop football.

At Portland State, a day of thank yous and text replies for Bruce Barnum -- and then back to work
