so ... didn't we hire hayford to recruit local kids? as i recall, a ton of people on this board were killing earliwine and burns for not recruiting locally..... so far, all i see is a walkon from gonzaga prep. same as what earliwine had.... at least earliwine and burns recruited seattle kids....

I for one could care less where the players come from...if they are locals that are D1 players fine if not start looking under rocks and look for some gems no matter where they are from. Europe and Eastern Block countries are producing great players.

I agree that we need to get players who are capable of winning in the Big Sky regardless of where they come from. It is ironic, however, that Earlywine was constantly being pressured ("badgered" was actually how he stated it to me on a couple of occasions) by the administration to get in-state guys because an in-state scholarship costs less than an out-of-state schollie. Again I will pose the question of whether we're Division 1 or not??? This was a point I didnt get to in any of my previous posts regarding an administration that doesnt understand D1 athletics - and especially recruiting. I have heard from several of our current and former coaches who've moved on that the biggest problem is our athletic department is that the people making the policies and decisions have never recruited a student-athlete, have never coached, and never even participated in sports at any level.

Maybe the administration has seen the light??? Maybe it's just that this AD feels like Coach Hayford is "his" hire and is invested in his success in a way that he never was with Earlywine, and Hamilton/Westphal never were with Burns. Whatever the reason, it seems like a good sign to me - and certainly a good sign for Coach Hayford.

I think the directive for the former coaches were to recruit local players and they were missing on them as they were headed elsewhere. Coach Hayford would simply be settling if he were to take just any local player. Winning is way more important. Plus, he did get the best player, on the best team in the state of WA. I think it says a lot that he chose to play at Eastern for coach Hayford as a walk on.

Looks like Central Michigan and Northern Arizona also offered him... anyone know much about Powell?

I don't care if our players are from BFE as long as they are good student-athletes who represent the University well and compete. Local players are just a bonus in Division I athletics.

Hadn't seen this posted anywhere, but I think this is our first commit for the 2012 season. He is a 6'6 220 pound forward from Phoenix. He averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds his Junior season. Apparently Hayford is really big on this kid, and he can shoot.

Powell looks like a nice player, and it certainly seems the EWU coaches are excited about him. It will be interesting to see what he can add next year, and he seems to be a nice fit with the current personnel.

Looking back at the Earlywine-era... there were only 4 players from Washington that I can remember, and 1 of them got kicked off the team. Heard the new recruit Powell is BAAAAD, and I mean that in the best way possible. Like... Floyd Mayweather BAAAD. Hide your wife and kids, Danny Powell is coming to Eagleville. Next EAG to go to the LEAGUE!!! Hoping my man Beau can keep the playoff dreams alive this weekend. NATIONAL CHAMPS UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE!!!!! IN BEAU WE TRUST!!!
