Something of a "Battle of the Big Sky" happened in the CFL this weekend, as Calgary seriously outplayed British Columbia 41-6. Most of the action surrounded players other than the BSC reps that would warrant placing this post. But just so that we can follow some guys who have been big in our recent fandom:
EWU's Bo Levi Mitchell, a CFL star of recent years, was one of four passers for Calgary, but he didn't do very well. Perhaps they were holding him back as some NFL teams do with their stars. I'm not sure how much water that holds, though, because they also have Jake Maier, who's a CFL-caliber star as well. Anyways, Mitchell threw 3-10-37-2 INT. For BC, Sac State's own Kevin Thomson did a LITTLE better than Mitchell, passing 9-20-137-1INT, and adding 6 yards on the ground. Much of Calgary's production came on defense and special teams, as they posted a pick six, an incredible punt return for a touchdown (that should have been called back at the end for a block in the punter's back as he served as the last line of defense), and a blocked punt that the Stampeders recovered on the Lions' 4 yard line (which they converted into a touchdown a play or two later). This was the first preseason game of the year, and it showed. It was also by far the most lopsided game of the weekend, both CFL and USFL.
