Bengals Lose in OT, but Find Another PG

Idaho State lost in OT, 91-82, to Eastern Kentucky in Cancun today. The Bengals led most of the game before the Colonels tied it with 8 seconds to play, then outscored ISU 20-11 in overtime. Freshman Brandon Boyd, starting in place of Ethan Teldair, scored 25 points on 9 of 16 shooting, including 4 of 6 from three point range. He added two assists and four steals, although he turned it over 6 times. Geno Luzcando had a mixed triple double -- 20 points, 11 rebounds -- and 11 turnovers. (Geno also had 7 steals -- he was ACTIVE today). In all the Bengals turned it over 30 times. Ouch. Their free throw shooting continued to haunt them too -- just 12-20, 60 percent. Would have been good to get that first win and especially without ET. Get 'em tomorrow.

Let's be honest with ourselves here. You can never win a game when your starting pg and shooting guard combine for 17 turnovers. That is just outright BAD. So often they try to push the ball into areas they shouldn't have, and hesitated to kick the ball out to open shooters. 31 turnovers is no formula to win. Good game in other areas, but your main ball handlers can't have 17 TOS against a team they should have beaten.

Offensive system is to stagnant, ball is in the pg hand way to much. In overtime , the ot the pg had the ball 95 percent of the time. There seems to be no offensive set. I have not seen a single screen set other then a ball screen time to time. Due to that the ball lacks movement at times, players are left stranded in their positions with absolourly no where to go, while their lanes tonoenetrate are clogged because the center refuses to move out the key. These should be addressed . Everything else will fall into play. Eku just hit some big shots in OT.

Same issues were driving Bill crazy against Utah State. Today ISU was playing with a freshman PG in his third game, and a center who averaged 1 point a game as a senior in high school and is still learning the game of basketball as a redshirt sophomore. Hayes Garrity was seeing his first action in awhile and it showed -- he turned the ball over 4 times as well. Geno's struggles are disconcerting -- he's a junior now and he should be taking much better care of the ball right now.

It's still early. Hopefully the Bengals can get everybody out of the doghouse and the walking wounded healthy, develop a consistent rotation and establish roles. If that happens I still see plenty of potential for this ball club.

Hundred percent agree. Cut the to down and have a more efficient offense. Defense must improve to, all a work in progress. Another part is utilizing all talents.
