Best Bigs in the Sky

A truly talented team has depth and talent at every position. In the Sky, a team with a great backcourt can win, and does frequently. However, the great teams have great balance between the backcourt and the frontcourt. Even though they didn't win a regular season conference championship, Montana had a truly dynamic frontcourt, anchored by Brian Qvale. Without a doubt, for the past two seasons he was the best big in the conference. However, with Qvale gone now, who takes over his crown?

Right now, the best big in the conference, in my opinion, would have to be Nate Loreazu of PSU. However, I don't think Kyle Tresnak or Darin Mahoney are too far behind. Mahoney is the type of player ever team covets. No, he isn't the flashy scorer, but he does give enough on the offensive end to make huge difference, especially when you have Lillard and Bamforth in the backcourt. Mahoney is a guy that does the little things: dives after balls, plays tenacious defense, and gives it his all when he is on the floor. UNCO's double threat of Addo and Osborne are scary, but right now, not as much as they will be.

PSU has a very strong frontcourt, which could pay dividends during the conference season. The other Big Sky teams either have bigs in the development phase, or are very thin in that area (NAU and MSU). They have Loreazu, Ronaldo Parker, and Chehales Tapscott. Weber, luckily, can counter those three with Tresnak, Mahoney, and Fulton. Hajek is a premier big that can come off the bench. He has been getting a lot better and is improving each game he plays in and once Otis and Bull are cleared to play, Weber will have the deepest frontcourt in the Sky. Yes, PSU has three talented bigs, but they don't have a lot of depth. Cataldo hasn't, at this point, lived up to expectations and there really isn't anyone else on their bench. Nevertheless, when PSU isn't having to go up against Weber, the Vikings should find a lot of success in the paint. No one else in the Sky has a lot to counter with.

UM does have Selvig, Reader, and Ward...but up to this point nobody in Missoula has been able to make up for the loss of Qvale, and without Qvale the UM offense and defense is merely a mirror of its former self. Eastern has a couple of really strong bigs in Ederain and Johnson, but neither are WOW worthy. State has Cloud, who, at times, has really shown some spunk, but isn't a superstar. ISU, UNCO, and SAC each have some talent, especially UNCO in Proctor, Addo, and Osborne; yet, Proctor seems to have taken a step back this season, while Addo and Osborne each have ability, but haven't found a way to really mesh that ability (I think they will...UNCO will be good again, but not this season) Addo is the scorer and Osborne the defender.

For Weber...it just shows how strong the team is. For the rest of the Sky, it shows how important Bigs are, and when you don't have them how much a coach wishes he had them. One reason the Sky is so weak, this season, is because of its lack of developed bigs. Anyway, the below bigs are my top frontcourt players on their respective team. I don't think NAU has a big. Do they?

1. Nate Loreazu
2. Kyle Tresnak
3. Dereck Selvig (even though he thinks he is a guard)
4. Cliff Ederain
5. Mohammed Cloud
6. Emmanuel Addo
7. Konnor Veteto
8. Abner Moreira

If Hajek's play in the last couple of games are any indication of how he will perform in Big Sky action, I'd put him right up there in the top 5. But I suppose he is relatively unproven so far. Maybe that will change in the next couple of weeks.

Very good list.

You are right on PSU, in terms of offensive firepower nobody can match their trio of Chehales Tapscott, Nate Lozeau, and Renado Parker. It is tough to consider Tapscott a true big because he is 6'5'', but I think he is the best frontcourt player in the conference. He is a good scorer, rebounds very well, passes well, and blocks some shots. Lozeau is a good choice too as he is a true big.

Tresnak has a chance because of his scoring ability, but the fact remains that right now he is a bad rebounder for a big. He needs to improve that. You hit it right on about Addo/Osborne for UNC... they are solid players, but as sophomores they are not consistent or good enough yet to be considered near the top. If they keep developing, they will definitely be real good!

And no, NAU does NOT have any bigs right now, ha!

Yikes...I realized I had some serious spelling errors in my original post.

Mohammad Fall...Not cloud. Heavens!!

Hajek is starting to come into his own. He and Tres are going to be a scary duo in the future. Add in Bolomboy and Hill, Weber is going to be scary for quite some time. I hope Rahe is able to get Mika too.

On a side note. If ASU continues to struggle, I could see Sednick (Sp?) being replaced at seasons end. There are quite a few quys signing with ASU who were being courted by Weber too (Eric Jacobsen, Kenny Martin, Calean Robinson), is there a chance that Weber is able to get one of those guys, if ASU replaces their coach? I can't imagine a "Big" time program keeping a coach who has had two bad years in a row. Heavens, Weber wouldn't...Why would ASU?

Good point about Herb Sendek, probably out the door. You never know though he was very successful at NC State. ACC COY at one point. His first 4 or so seasons at ASU were pretty successful.

Mika already committed to B..yu

Mika is already gone, huh? Oh well...Next.

If Sendek were to leave, opening up scholarship options, I'd hope there was a chance to get Kenny Martin. He reminds me a lot of Patten and Arturas.

We've got to give Rahe credit though. He does try to sign local kids, he just isn't getting any to sign with us right now. Personally, and of course I'm biased, but I think Loveridge is making a horrible decision to play for the Utes. I'm not really sure who, if any, other Utah kids Rahe is looking at for 2013 or possibly for spring. I know that Jaden Jackson might be a good addition this spring (most likely under some other type of financial assistance; not an athletic scholarship). Van Pelt, hopefully, will be coming back for the Cats after his mission. He has been traveling with the team, which is a great sign for a RS Walk on, and I have heard he gives it his all in practice. There is a kid in 2A at South Sevier, who might be someone we keep an eye on (Parsons). other than that, I can't really think of anyone else. Yes, there is a PG at East who is lighting up scoreboards, but I've heard he is a huge Utah fan, and is waiting for LK to offer. But you never know. Kinda hard trying to keep up with the Utah recruiting. It really isn't organized.

Regarding Sendek: ASU just signed a two year extension with him, I think he is good through 2016. If released, i think the buyout is in the "millions" range! Even ASU doesn't have that spare $, and with removing Erickson from football, and the chase on a few coaches before getting Todd Grahm after one year at Pitt.... Many in AZ are asking for AD Lisa Love to be removed...

Sendek just signed a 2 year contract extension @ ASU. Regardless of how dark things look in Tempe, I don't see him leaving. There's some talent there - guards in particular (Lockett and King) - but the Sundevil bigs have two left feet and five thumbs on each hand. Truly ugly in the paint.

I haven't watched them live yet but PSU has to have the best crop of bigs on paper in conference. Weber State lost a big to injury, right?

And NAU does indeed have a big...the leading Lumberjack rebounder, going into tonight's game, is their 6 foot 4 inch guard, Durrell Norman. 6 4" is big, right? :? The rest of NAU's post players (Olayinka, Jacobsen, Ekanem and Berwernick) are young or new transfers to the program. They've all showed some promise and positive effort to go with some growing pains early in the season. NAU's announcer said something about NAU reinstating NAU's post player, Josh Lepley, who had been removed from the program last summer. I don't know what to think with this at all as the most Lepley has shown in the past is a bit of rebounding and an occasional block on defense. He was in Coach Adras' doghouse last season from what I heard. Maybe this has something to do with Adras' resignation?

MTJ, Weber State lost Frank Otis (who was their 4 to an injury), as well as Kyle Bullinger (who was their 3, but leading rebounder).

Norman did look really solid tonight, he is really scrappy down there. Obviously at 6'4'' a bit out of position (to say the least), but I like his toughness. Interesting about Lepley... I know I wrote about him getting dismissed a long while back on my blog, and some of the comments I got (I think you were even in the discussion with the anonymous commenters) certainly strongly suggested that Lepley being dismissed had to do with Adras. That would be interesting, as he could definitely be used.

Another NAU guy I like is Gaellen Bewernick... again only 6'6'' but plays down low quite a bit. He looks like a really nice player, especially for a freshmen.
