Best Team in Weber State History

Where would last years team rank?

Personally, I feel that the 1980 team was the best team ever, but the 68', 99', and 03' teams could all make a strong case for being the best. Maybe even the 95' team. What aspects and characteristics are necessary for a team to be seen as great? Surely, last years team can't be, since they didn't win any championships. But they did break numerous WSU records and had some huge wins, beating UNI, Oral Roberts, and especially Dayton on the road were pretty big wins. I still maintain that they were a better overall team than UM, but the Griz did win the title so? What else, # of All Big Sky players? Wins and against what type of competition? Winning streaks (not the kind that dwell in Catcat's shorts)? Etc...Another requisite major victory in the NCAA Tournament? If so, the 80' wouldn't be the best. But look who was on that team. YIKES!! Final aspect, final national ranking??

I still feel the 1980 team was our best team ever.

To me, to be considered at all. a team must have had at least one NCAA tourney win. So, last years team doesn't make the cut, right out of the gate. Last years team would have to rank fourth or fifth. The team that beat North Carolina and the team that beat Michigan State would be one and two. I'm just not sure what order I would put them in. They were both great teams with great players on them. The caliber of players over the past few years and up to now, has been better than those two teams. However, recent teams have not accomplished as much or gone as far. Our current guys have got to learn how to win the BIG games.

The problem with basing it on NCAA tournament wins is that the seeding and the match-up has a huge impact. The '03 team was seeded 12th and was matched up against what I thought was a very underrated Wisconsin team. Just not a good draw for Weber.

I've got to lean toward the 2003 team (sorry, don't know anything about the '80 team) Hard to argue against being undefeated in your conference. And remember, Ocokoljic missed almost all the pre-conference season, where they picked up 5 of their 6 losses. Plus, they beat a pretty good BYU squad that year.

we have had numerous great teams so its hard to rank any of them in order if you want my opinion.

-record? top 3 - 2013 (30), 2003 & 1980 (26), 1969 (27)
-post season appearance? 14 ncaa, 3 nit, 2 cit, 1 cbi
-ncaa tourney appearance?
-ncaa tourney seed? our 3 best - 7, 9, 12 - what about teams before the field of 64 seeds started, 1976?
-big sky title? 19 of them to choose
-top 25 rankings? 4 teams finished in AP top 25

what about...
-record vs instate?
-quality of wins? - this one though bugs me, you can only attempt to beat those on the schedule. every yr is diff. i guess you could nitpick losses.
-attendance relevant? 1980 averaged 10,500 for 16 home games.
-players drafted to nba per team? 18 have gone to nba

Yeah there are a lot of factors involved. The 68-69 team, dependent on the various factors discussed, strength of schedule, # of players to play professionally after college, season attendance (pre-Dee), wins and win streak, post season ranking, post season play and who they beat and ultimately lost too, and I'd say margin of victory; would have been the best overall team.

This past years team was the best i have seen in my 8 years up here so i'm going to say they are the best weber team. Only because i didnt really follow weber until 06 when I moved up here. I am going to go out on a limb and say watch out for this years team to make a case to be one of the best if not the best team weber has seen. I think we have a chance to beat BYU down in happy valley, possilby beat CSU and put up a fight against UCLA

Last years team was excellent, but they never won a championship and didn't finish the season in the top 25. Weber has had 4 teams finish the season ranked, and a handful of others finish just outside of the top 25. True, you can argue that last years team was the best Weber team since the 02-03 squad. This years team is extremely talented, but does it have as talented of a starting five as say Boyette, Hamilton, Sparrow, Slobodan, and Bachman or Gill, Jackson, Baskerville, Harold, Jensen? Well on paper yes. We shall see. I'm hoping it is!! :thumb:

i think for me the top 2 have to be '69 and '80.

only 2 teams in the history of the big sky have gone undefeated in conf play so that has to count for something - weber 1969, weber 2003.

Personally, my favorite team was the 2003 team. But that doesn't mean it was the best team ever. I really loved watching last years team, but once again, compared to other teams, they really don't fully match up.

Richardson, Bamforth and Berry vs. Boyette, Hamilton and Sparrow

Otis and Tresnak vs Ocokoljic and Bachman

Wheelwright, Bolomboy, and Williams vs Morrison, Danley, and Barton

Who would win?

2013 got 10,600 to a game that wasnt a big sky tournament and wasnt an instate team. that hasnt been done since...possibly 1983 but i would have to research that.

i would rather answer that after they are all graduated! most likely will tell you trez/joel would serve the serb & swiss.

...what about the greatest moment in weber state athletics history? does that automatically make a team #1 overall? beating #13 ranked, 3 seed UNC in 1999 is the biggest moment weber has had, one of the biggest for the conf if not biggest.

Don't forget about the 1995 squad that beat No. 3 seed Michigan State as the No. 14 seed. They even came dangerously close to knocking off Allen Iverson and Georgetown in the next round to get into the Sweet 16. It often gets buried beneath the win over North Carolina a few years later.

Both teams should have been in the Sweet 16. An overtime loss to Florida in 99 and a (close to) half court buzzer beater from Georgetown in 95. Not to mention a missed free throw on Weber's end just before the end of regulation in both cases.
