Big Sky Awards

So, this year is going to be very tough to call. There are a few no-brainers, though, so I'll take a stab at it. The Big Sky was stacked with great guards this year. Aside from Joel, Breunig, Jois and Forte, the conference isn't deep with bigs.

MVP: Joel Bolomboy, F, Weber State (Breunig could push for co-MVP, but I don't think it will happen)
Newcomer of Year: Ethan Telfair, G, Idaho State; Cameron Forte, F, Portland State (could go either way, but both deserve this)
Freshman of Year: Tyler Hall, G, Montana State (again, nobody else is even close)
Defensive Player of Year: Venky Jois, F, Eastern Washington (Got robbed last year of this award. Should get it this time.)
Coach of Year: Randy Rahe, Weber State (Idaho State fans will be pissed, as Bill Evans has a good case. Maybe Montana's Decuire, too.)

First Team:
Joel Bolomboy, F, Weber State
Ethan Telfair, G, Idaho State
Quinton Hooker, G, North Dakota
Venky Jois, F, Eastern Washington
Austin McBroom, G, Eastern Washington
Martin Breunig, F, Montana

Second Team:
Jeremy Senglin, G, Weber State
Tyler Hall, G, Montana State
Cameron Forte, F, Portland State
Victor Sanders, G, Idaho
Kris Yanku, Montana State

Honorable Mention:
Marcus Colbert, G, Montana state
Felix Von Hofe, G, Eastern Washington
Walter Wright, G, Montana
Anthony Johnson, G, Northern Colorado
Chad Sherwood, G, Idaho
Kyndahl Hill, F, Weber State
Justin Strings, F, Sacramento State

Braxton for Weber I believe could have a couple votes for freshman of the year,he did step up pretty good when Bolomboy was out and he got better as the year went on.

I like this annual thread from Hawks. What happened to ewu? 6th place with two potential first teasers?

I hope Evans gets the coach award. From last place every yr to almost 3rd. Not an easy task in Pocatello.

I think Hayford is simply a subpar coach, who recruits well. Next to us, EWU has arguably the most talent in the Big Sky. That being said, the Eagles go as Venky Jois goes, and when someone can neutralize or limit him, they struggled this season. As much as we sometimes get frustrated with Randy, he orchestrated two impressive victories without the best player in the league. I don't know if Hayford has that kind of ability.

Hayford doesn't get bigs. If the guy doesn't shoot 3's then he isn't developed.

I agree that Joel should be the MVP and Zach Hall is the FOY, other than that I'm not really sure. I agree that the conference is crap. I hate this road to reNO garbage. We should be hosting this week.

Evans should get coach of the year, while Rahe is deserving, Rahe and the Wildcats did what they were expected to do, Idaho State on the other hand exceeded all expectations, and finished in the top 4.

Randy will probably get COY, he deserves it. You can make a case for Evans as well. However, 4th place is hard to get around. Yes they came a long ways, so did we.

There is no question that Bolomboy is MVP/POY.

The first place team usually gets 2 on the first team. I expect Jeremy to be there along with Joel.

There are so many good freshmen in the league this year, you can make a case for 3 or four of them for FOY.

Likewise with NCOY.

To the victors go the spoils. :coffee:

Bolomboy is the POY easily....who the hell is Zach Hall??? I know that Tyler Hall will win FOY and Ethan Telfair will win NCOY...COY is between Rahe and Evans....

That's right, his name is Tyler Hall...

So, are you driving the Sac State fan van to the biggest little city in the west (Nevada's version of Las Vegas but afflicted with a venereal disease)? Getting all 6 of you together to make the drive over to Reno? Closest school should have the most fans, right?

We will probably have more fans than Weber from what I read on here....our pep band is going...I'm not sure about a student rooters bus...but yes, I will be there as I was in Ogden 2 years ago....how many tournaments have you ever travelled to tal? I really think you are going to be the one that loses out on some good basketball...

Sounds like Travis was a little pissed about it per this quote from the article in Go Griz.

With Breunig at the helm of second year head coach Travis DeCuire's squad, UM has gone 28-8 in Big Sky play in the last two seasons.

"I guess 28-8 hasn't earned the respect of the coaches in this conference," says DeCuire. "We have work to do."

He definitely has a gripe. Without Breunig, Montana would have lost a handful more games. He really makes that team tick. In the past, all you needed was an amazing backcourt, now what sets the mold of success are the frontcourts. Good bigs!! Breunig is something special. But it is hard to argue with Joel. Top rebounder in conference history, almost 1500 points, one of the best block artist in the history of the conference and he's had games of 20/20 this year and 24 games with double doubles...impressive resume.

DeCuire wasn't upset that Breunig didn't get MVP, he was upset that he wasn't a unanimous 1st team selection. And he definitely has a reason to be upset about that. Who wouldn't vote Breunig 1st team?

Oh...that's strange. I don't know who else, other than Joel, has had a bigger impact in this league. I know there are a lot of really good guards, but there are only a few really strong bigs. Maybe Geving at PSU has his undies in a twist over Cameron Forte. Who knows...but one thing is for sure. He and Joel are two of the best players in this conference.

Hands down COY should be Bill Evans.

 COY=Bill Evans, ISU...well deserved! He earned it & deserved it for his team's results moreso than Randy Rahe did with WSU's talent and the predicted 1st place result coming about.
