Pre-season favorite and No. 3-ranked Montana drops its conference opener against Weber State on the same weekend that No. 11 Eastern Washington loses 47-36 at Portland State, turning the Big Sky Conference race into a virtual free-for-all heading into Saturday's games.
The consensus among the conference's coaches is that none of the recent surprises was that unusual, and that more surprises could be just around the corner. There might even be a couple upsets this week when Portland State plays at No. 18 Northern Arizona, No. 22 Weber State travels to Montana State, No. 12 Montana plays at No. 23 Eastern Washington, and Idaho State goes to Northern Colorado.
