Park City, UT-Portland State senior linebacker Andy Schantz met with the media today at the Big Sky Conference Football Kickoff Media Event. It was part of a two-day annual media event sponsored by the conference.
Schantz, who is the Vikings’ top returning defensive player, is representing PSU at the Football Kickoff. He spoke with television, radio and newspaper reporters from around the conference.
"I think we are going to do really well," Schantz said, when asked about the Vikings' prospects for the coming season. "We have a year under our belt, and we've had a year to correct the things we have learned in these systems. We are going to be a different team this year, definitely a different team."
"I think the conference is extremely competitive. There is good quality of players. My first year (in 2007), I was almost shocked at the level of play and all the great players."
Head Coach Jerry Glanville will meet with the media on Tuesday morning. The league will also release the preseason coaches and media polls on Tuesday.
Schantz, a 6-1, 235-pound senior from Santa Clarita, CA, had 85 tackles for the Vikings in nine games last season. He made a remarkable recovery from a torn MCL in his knee at midseason, missing just two contests, and earned honorable mention All-Conference honors. Schantz also had nine tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles, five pass breakups and a fumble recovery for touchdown in 2007. He figures to anchor the inside linebacker spot again this season.
In addition to his talented play, Schantz has become a bit of a television star in the Portland area. He is a featured player on the “Camp Glanville” television series that runs weekly on Comcast SportsNet. Camp Glanville began during spring football, and is about midway through its 20-week run. The series will conclude in early September.
Later on Monday, Schantz will participate in the Big Sky Conference golf tournament, then take part in a promotional photo shoot on Tuesday morning.
McCLINTOCK NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE
Portland State junior fullback Bobby McClintock was selected to the preseason All-Big Sky Conference team in a release by the conference on Monday. McClintock missed virtually the entire 2007 season after being injured in the season opener at McNeese State. However, he was a first team All-Big Sky selection in 2006 as a freshman. McClintock has made a full recovery and will be ready for fall practice, which begins in two weeks.
PLAYOFF CHANGES COMING IN THE FUTURE
Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton discussed the expansion of the NCAA I FCS playoff system in 2010 during his address to conference officials and media on Monday morning. The playoff system will grow to 20 from its current total of 16. The expansion will allow the addition of automatic bids for the Northeastern Conference and Big South Conference that year. It will also include the addition of two at-large berths, which can be beneficial for the always-tough Big Sky Conference. The expansion of the playoffs will shorten the FCS season by one week, essentially eliminating a bye week for schools.
