Park City, UT-Portland State senior linebacker Andy Schantz met with the media today at the Big Sky Conference Football Kickoff Media Event. It was part of a two-day annual media event sponsored by the conference.

Schantz, who is the Vikings’ top returning defensive player, is representing PSU at the Football Kickoff. He spoke with television, radio and newspaper reporters from around the conference.

"I think we are going to do really well," Schantz said, when asked about the Vikings' prospects for the coming season. "We have a year under our belt, and we've had a year to correct the things we have learned in these systems. We are going to be a different team this year, definitely a different team."

"I think the conference is extremely competitive. There is good quality of players. My first year (in 2007), I was almost shocked at the level of play and all the great players."

Head Coach Jerry Glanville will meet with the media on Tuesday morning. The league will also release the preseason coaches and media polls on Tuesday.

Schantz, a 6-1, 235-pound senior from Santa Clarita, CA, had 85 tackles for the Vikings in nine games last season. He made a remarkable recovery from a torn MCL in his knee at midseason, missing just two contests, and earned honorable mention All-Conference honors. Schantz also had nine tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles, five pass breakups and a fumble recovery for touchdown in 2007. He figures to anchor the inside linebacker spot again this season.

In addition to his talented play, Schantz has become a bit of a television star in the Portland area. He is a featured player on the “Camp Glanville” television series that runs weekly on Comcast SportsNet. Camp Glanville began during spring football, and is about midway through its 20-week run. The series will conclude in early September.

Later on Monday, Schantz will participate in the Big Sky Conference golf tournament, then take part in a promotional photo shoot on Tuesday morning.

McCLINTOCK NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE
Portland State junior fullback Bobby McClintock was selected to the preseason All-Big Sky Conference team in a release by the conference on Monday. McClintock missed virtually the entire 2007 season after being injured in the season opener at McNeese State. However, he was a first team All-Big Sky selection in 2006 as a freshman. McClintock has made a full recovery and will be ready for fall practice, which begins in two weeks.

PLAYOFF CHANGES COMING IN THE FUTURE
Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton discussed the expansion of the NCAA I FCS playoff system in 2010 during his address to conference officials and media on Monday morning. The playoff system will grow to 20 from its current total of 16. The expansion will allow the addition of automatic bids for the Northeastern Conference and Big South Conference that year. It will also include the addition of two at-large berths, which can be beneficial for the always-tough Big Sky Conference. The expansion of the playoffs will shorten the FCS season by one week, essentially eliminating a bye week for schools.

Anyone want to guess on where we'll be picked in the media and/or coaches polls tomorrow?

The Sporting News has us at 6th in their college preview. I think we'll come in at 5th in the media poll, and 4th in the coaches poll.

There are some good linebackers in this conference, but I was sort of expecting to see Schantz on this list considering that he was an honorable mention All-Big Sky last year and missed two games.

Congrats to Bobby on making this.

Thanks for posting that link. Since when did the conference get that fancy new website?

It was about a month or so ago that they revamped their site. It was long overdue.

Vikings Picked To Place Sixth In Big Sky Football Race

http://www.goviks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?temp_site=NO&DB_OEM_ID=19300&ATCLID=1522633

Park City, UT-The Portland State football team was picked to place sixth in both preseason Big Sky Conference polls released today by the league at the Big Sky Conference Football Kickoff. The Vikings, coming off a 3-8 season, 3-5 in the Big Sky, also finished sixth last year in the Big Sky race.

Head Coach Jerry Glanville met with the media in a morning interview session at the Football Kickoff. Senior linebacker Andy Schantz took part in a photo shoot, along with top players from other teams around the league. In addition to Schantz, several other players requested to have photos taken with the popular Viking coach.

Glanville doesn't place a lot of stock in preseason polls, but when asked about his team's position in the rankings, he also doesn't mince words. "On paper, we think we'll be good, but we have to go prove it," said Glanville.

2007 league champion Montana was picked first in both the coaches and media polls. Montana garnered seven of nine first-place votes from the coaches. Eastern Washington was a close second in the media poll to Montana, earning 19 first-place votes to 23 for the Grizzlies.

Northern Arizona and Montana State share the third and fourth place positions in both polls, followed by fifth place Weber State, then the Vikings. Sacramento State, Idaho State and Northern Colorado hold down the final three spots.

The Vikings figure to be very young in 2008, with just 11 returning starters and 29 returning letterwinners. Preseason practice begins at Portland State on Aug. 4. The season-opener is an Aug. 30 contest against Western Oregon at PGE Park. Big Sky play begins on Sept. 27 at Sacramento State.

I honestly think that we'll finish better than 6th. Last year was a train wreck and we still finished 6th.

The defense will be better, and that will bode well in games like the MSU/WSU/NAU games where we just couldn't stop the other team's offense in the 2nd half due to depth issues. Heck, we had a five game streak in conference play where we gave up an average of 40 points per game, and it can't get any worse than that...

Western Oregon W
at UC Davis W/L (Coming off Bye Week)
at Washington State L
at Sacramento State W
Eastern Washington W/L
at Northern Arizona L
Idaho State W
at Weber State L
Montana W/L
at Montana State L
Northern Colorado W

So...........7-4 at best....and.... 4-7 at worst?
