The Big Sky Conference acknowledged a scorekeeping error during Northern Colorado's 73-70 win against Northern Arizona in Tuesday's conference tournament semifinal.

Northern Arizona was not awarded a one-and-one free throw situation with 11:21 left in the first half after Northern Colorado committed its seventh team foul. Because the official scorekeeper erroneously recorded it as the sixth foul, Northern Arizona retained possession and eventually turned the ball over. The Lumberjacks did eventually shoot in the double bonus.

Northern Colorado, which captured its first NCAA tournament bid after beating Montana in Wednesday's championship game, hosted the tournament based upon winning the Big Sky's regular-season title.

"The Big Sky Conference and championship host University of Northern Colorado regret the error," according to the Big Sky statement sent shortly before the championship game.

I regret that we have such horrendous refs in this conference. This is just one example of many mistakes by the refs during this game. Too late UNC is now going to the big dance. Nothing anybody can do now. Somehow I still feel cheated. Losing doesn't bother me. It's the way that we lost, I feel cheated by the refs. Anyway, it's water under the bridge now. Let's move on. With a heavy heart but i'm moving on. :( :(

70 free throws in two college home games still seems fishy. But that's not what's sticking in my craw two days later. It's the fact that the scorer's table staff and the Big Sky conference referees received no consequences or reprimands, apart from a lukewarm public apology by the league, for stealing two free throws from the opposing team in a do or die playoff game. That's not blowing a call (i.e. missing a charging call) during a fast, pressure filled situation of a live game. That's purely not doing your job. Your job is to count to seven and to count to ten. Grade schoolers do that every day.

It's gonna be a while before this one stops causing consternation. Losing when your team is decidely worse is palatable. It hurts but it's easier to deal with. Losing when your team has a chance stolen from them is hard to stomach. I can only imagine how players feel after these things happen. And yes, I know, two points wasn't the final difference in the score. It was three points. But the numbers of ways that one-and-one free throw situation could have changed the outcome of the game is immeasureable.

I've had friends ref football at the collegiate level. I've had friends coach and ref at high school/youth league level. It isn't easy and it's completely thankless. While refs can drive me nuts, I don't envy their job one bit.

All I can say is .... come on CBI or CIT tourneys.

You called it. NAU to CIT!!! Our season isn't over yet. Let's go Jacks! :D :D   :D :D
