Big Sky Scheduling

I found this while trolling around some of the other BSC team’s boards. It looks like the basketball schedule will look a little different, yet very familiar next season. The back to back games are gone and the Big Sky is going back to Thursday-Saturday games.

University presidents on Tuesday approved a return to a Thursday-Saturday scheduling format during the final day of the league's spring meetings in Salt Lake City. It was one of two big changes along with the lifting of travel party limitations on bus trips.

The Big Sky is also talking about making the Big Sky Tournament being played at one location. I am not sure if I like this decision or not. I like how home court advantage is a reward for the higher seeded teams.

There's a major logistical problem with the current set-up: the team that hosts has to scramble to get everything set up for a major tournament. It's a huge time-crunch. A strict rotation would allow schools to plan it in advance, but also provides a potential reward for those who blow chunks (something those in your camp understandably want to avoid). My preferred solution would be to have a permanent location in a spot that could service the large number of people that would be coming in for the tournament, particularly if both tournaments are co-located. That would save time and $$ for fans with both their teams in the tournament. It would also put the onus for organizing the entire thing on the LEAGUE, which can spread the pain out amongst EVERYONE if necessary. I would suggest Seattle as that won't really be a homecourt advantage for ANYONE, which is a good thing.

The Big West would be a great example if they didn't have a dump like the Anaheim Convention Center. Anaheim is a great place because of the added attractions of Disneyland (for the family) and Hooters (for the single guys), but the ACC is a complete dump. The Pond isn't much better as a venue because without Utah State, the league can't fill it. The local teams don't bring enough fans, and UOP's horde isn't enough. I don't think this would be an issue in Seattle for the Sky, though. Portland would be an option if we can handle letting the Vikes have essentially home games. The rent at ARCO is probably too high (not to mention travel costs for the northern schools) to make Sac a viable option (unfortunately), and there's likely nothing big enough in Idaho/Montana to make it worth it to do this there. Perhaps Salt Lake, but that would be a burden for the western/southern teams and grants the same home status to Weber. So Seattle's probably the best fit if we go to a centralized concept.

Yes let's move it to Seattle. A city that has little to no interest in the Big Sky. This would be great for attendance figures. If the conference is going to move the tournament to a city without a BSC school located nearby, my vote is for Vegas.

How about Arcata?

Let's really hook SD up. Let's build an outdoor court in PB.

ROFL.

Seriously, though, you do make a valid argument against Seattle. I was just afraid of giving the home team too much of a home-court advantage. For the BW, that's diluted because of all the teams in the Anaheim area. I guess we could go to Portland after all.

If they were to rotate the home location for the BSC tournament, I would think they would rotate between Portland, SLC, and Sac. All three have NBA arenas that could be rented out and those are the largest metropolitan areas that would have any interest in the BSC tournament that could potentially supply larger attendance. Plus all three would be relatively easy for fans to fly to.

Dont forget Phoenix with NAU.

I think Phoenix is a bit far from NAU. It would also add a ton to the travel costs for the northern teams. I think SD's proposal would make the best sense, especially if the LEAGUE were to run the tournament vice the schools. If the league has all year to figure out the logistical mess, the result will likely be a much more smoothly run tournament (even if both genders are involved) than what one would get with a school with limited funds scrambling at the last minute to put a tournament together.
