You mean Sac State rather than EWU?

We need a new Bball conference... Somehow, someway....

Weber needs to thrash their conference competition on a year to year basis before we can ask for a new conference. From 2000 to 2015, Weber State has only won the conference championship four times (twice since 2007). It would also help if they didn't lose to the likes of UVU--ever--home or away.

And what about the football team? How much are they holding back the basketball team from a new conference? I suppose Weber State could be a Big Sky everything but basketball school, but that's something else to think about. Weber State football pretty much fits the Big Sky like a glove. I cannot think of any other football conference that would better suit Weber State's present talent level. Look at Idaho for an example. They aren't hacking it elsewhere (football), and they are historically better than Weber at football.

In reality, I think Weber State should stay in the Big Sky, lead the way, and make the conference better by dominating it more than they have been (basketball). I don't know if that would attract better teams to the conference, but there don't seem to be any homes (conferences) for Weber to move to, even if they became annually dominant. I guess it'd be cool to play in the WCC with Gonzaga, St. Mary's, and BYU, but not only is Weber State not on their levels right now, but does the conference even have any room if that were an option, let alone invite them if there were?

The WCC is a private school (mostly Catholic), basketball-oriented, West Coast-based conference. I can't see them ever having an interest in any Big Sky school. Really, if you're Montana, Montana State or Weber State and you have higher aspirations (in football in particular, but also basketball), the Mountain West is your only hope. And there would have to be changes in the landscape for that to happen (Boise State gets invited to the Big 12, e.g.). Impossible? No, but unlikely for the foreseeable future.

A better plan is for Weber State, Montana and Montana State to work with the commissioner's office to try to get the rest of the conference to upgrade its approach. There has been a lot of talk (at least from the commissioner's office) about the Big Sky eventually going to two divisions in football: one would be FCS, one FBS. With Idaho apparently seriously considering moving its football program back to the Big Sky, then you add in New Mexico State, and the programs that are serious about moving up (Montana, MSU, etc.) can choose which division they want to be in.

But there has to be more commitment from the rest of the league to get serious about improving their athletic programs. Right now, I'd say there is about as much chance of schools like Portland State and Sac State dropping football as there is about them investing more in their athletic programs and raising basketball to a new level. But at least PSU is upgrading its basketball facility, and Sac State keeps talking about it. Idaho State desperately needs a real, dedicated basketball arena. But unless I win the lottery tonight, I don't see that happening in the near future.
