Biggest Portland State Athletic Challenge In History

Fill Stott Center for every men's home basketball game next year. If you agree and support this just post an OK as a reply.

Keep the MoJo going, Viks need your support to win the Big Sky basketball championship.

Sounds like I'll have a difficult class schedule during next basketball season, but I'll definitely try to be at Stott as much as possible to cheer on the team.

Dust:

I am sure everyone would agree, concentrate on your studies, as I am sure you do.

A degree from Portland State means something, it is a great school.

Perhaps you can do a little "marketing" with the students, their turnout was horrible last year, it needs to be better.

Keep up your outstanding comments, as well as everyone else who commented about their support of Viks basketball.

The response of those that responded, is awesome and passionate.

But do to the lack of volume in responders, I vote for D-2 in all sports. Much credit goes to the success of teams in the Big Sky by the Viks, but when it comes to revenue, D-2 to myself is the answer.

It is painful, but needed.

GoViks2:

I do think D-2 might be the answer some day to save Portland State athletics. I am not an "insider", but I do know a thing or two about economics.

I can also remember the days when PSU packed Civic Stadium and also put 2000-3000 people in either the Coliseum and Rose Garden when basketball came back in the late 90s. While with rent, it might not have been penciled out, it does tell me that at one time there were that many fans out there who would actually attend games.

From what I hear from other Viking fans, there is a limited budget to market PSU teams, so why not drop down to D-2, if were at a point of reaching the limit on fan base, then we all know running a D-2 athletic program is much less expensive than D-1 and FCS football.

It is great to have so many young men and women at Portland State win Big Sky championships, but we need the revenue sports to make those programs work, but in today's age it is all about money and no one seems to have any.

If I am wrong then you can post and tell me so since I am not an insider, but for sure I am not wrong on the economics.

Thank you

By dropping down to DII, you would decrease expenses, but you would also decrease football and conference revenue. There was a pretty good breakdown of the PSU athletic budget a few months back in the Oregonian that shows how important football is for revenue. Drop down, and you really put a cap on your money maker.

MM:

You always write good posts on here, always.

A question, don't you think you could still drop down, same expenses, but still get the big pay day, by playing a D-1 school each year in football?

Basketball might be better off for sure, going into the Pac-West or GNAC. I know it also boils down to ego for some folks, but if your averaging 800 fans per game in basketball and 5,000 in football, that does not cut it for a D-1 program and FCS football.

Per the NCCA stats the average attendance for all 335 D-1 schools in the 2010-11 for men's basketball was 5,100. Unless we can expand Stott, we are constantly going to tread water. As well, most of the schools that have low average attendance than the overall average have arenas that seat anywhere from 3,500-8,000, they just had losing programs. Needless to say we are capped, for probably many years to come at 1,400.

I would love to see athletics be huge at PSU, but being realistic, it is always going to be an uphill battle in my mind. At least it is nice to convey my thoughts without being called names. Thank you.

Portland will not support division II athletics in the long run. This is a major league sized city (underscore the word "sized"). People forget that in the D2 heydays, UO and OSU footall programs were in the tank. Portland would not have continued supporting the Vikings at that level.

Winning is, indeed, the key. Period. Especially in football. Portland is a Trailblazer baketball town...just ask the Pilots. When there is excitement, i.e. winning, we'll fill Stott...and, if we can become a major player at our level, we'll fill the bigger arena AD Chisholm has in mind.
