...at least, not legitimately. At least TWO things went wrong. To wit:
1. Game orders from NFL HQ that mandated a Pittsburgh victory. This was clear from the officiating throughout the entire game. The only places I've seen worse officiating is the Big West and the SJAA. Roethlisberger was effectively wearing a skirt, while Warner was allowed to be pummelled all night. BR got away with SEVERAL intentional groundings as well. That first-half-ending TD wasn't: Harrison was down by at least his facemask if not his knee as well before the ball crossed the plane. Harrison should have been tossed for that beat-down. Warner's arm was moving forward on that bogus fumble also. This cr@p wouldn't have happened with a Jerry Markbreit-led crew, I can assure you. (BTW, it's a complete disgrace that Markbreit's number was worn by one of those ignoramus officials and hasn't been retired.)
2. Given the Cardinal's history, I'm surprised nobody's figured this one out yet. Even with all the officiating misconduct going on last night, Warner and Fitzgerald had the game won. The defense, on the other hand, is a different story. Harkening back to the history of Chicago athletics, it's ALSO clear that somebody got to the Cardinal defense. The end of the game will forever be known as the strike of the Black Cardinals. There's no way that Holmes should have been allowed to get THAT free on the penultimate play, and even given that, there's absolutely no excuse for there to be THREE Everson Walls-types in the back of the end zone just letting Holmes make that cheap catch.
A double whammy of an officiating scandal and the return of Chicago shenanigans. That's the only way to explain the excrement that was yesterday's Super Bowl. And that from someone who's not a fan of EITHER team.
