early Thursday afternoon by Jim Kozimor, KHTK. Kozimor will be the TV announcer on Comcast for Saturday's game. Below is some of what was talked about during the interviews:
Coach Biggs said he thinks the Aggies have turned to a new chapter with their football team following a tough transition to D1, 2A. The "D" really improved after he hired Utah State's defensive coordinator and another assistant. He simplified things and they do more blitzing and are more athletic now.
On the Aggies offense, he said Denham is very good this year. He's cut way back on INT's and has a strong and accurate arm. He makes good decisions and isn't afraid of a blitz becuz he knows what to do with the ball. He admitted that their running attack isn't where they want it to be, but he feels it has improved some the last couple weeks. They had to play two RS linemen this season and lost two outstanding lineman, one to the Tampa Bay Bucs. He likes the Wildcat with Aprile (sp?) who moved over from safety, but who played as an option QB in high school and is big at 215#. He added that WR Carter is only three receptions away from the school record and NFL scouts are saying that he will be a mid-round draft pick for sure.
He explained that they are allowed 63 scholarships and he's using 56 now, but they can break them up which the D1 schools aren't allowed to do, but they get 85. So he's got 81 kids on scholarship by spreading them out. He added that he thinks people that haven't seen D1,2A football would be surprised at the quality and they should come out and watch. He says coach Sperbeck has done a good job at Sac St and he enjoys the rivalry and both coaches are building for big crowds.
Coach Sperbeck said that even though their record isn't as good as they'd like, they've played a tougher schedule this season and the team is more competitive this year. He said that we've set the bar higher becuz we have higher expectations for this program. He doesn't want to use injuries , especially to so many RB's, as an excuse becuz everyone has injuries by this time of the year. The Hornets started the year with seven RB's and lost 5, but after moving a LB over they'll have three this Saturday and all three will play. They haven't had to change much for these replacement RB's either. They all picked everything up quickly and the injuries have given other kids an opportunity to play too. He hasn't yet decided who will start at QB, but both are capable. He'll decide after Friday's practice.
He added that people have told him there is more support for the program than in the past and he really appreciates that. He likes to recruit within a two hour radius of Sacramento to give the kids here a chance first, but will look outside if need be. He likes this game becuz it really sparks the community and it's a great rivalry game.
