Brandon Kaufman Draft Stock

I have been looking around a bit for draft projections and BK, and most sites have him listed as going around the 7th round. Hopefully a good combine will move him up draft boards.

I found this link that had BK as one of the most underrated draft prospects.

Nice article about Brandon. Is it a big $$ difference in the amount of the contract if he gets drafted in the 7th round vs the 2nd round?

Huge difference. They outline all the reasons it shocked me that he didn't stick around another year.

With the new collective bargaining agreement that limits the pay of first contracts, most players are opting to get into the NFL as quickly as possible, regardless of draft position. Check out this site:

http://www.draftmetrics.com/files/rookiesalarycap.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The money for the first round is still big money (but less than it used to be) but by the time you are in the 3rd round the max money is $700k/year for 4 years. The money for a 5th round pick is $100k/year for 4 years. The most important goal is to get the clock ticking and hope you are good enough to make it 5 seasons and get your payday.

If a players draft slot is very low it might be better to go undrafted and have an opportunity to select which team you want to play for. This is how Doug Baldwin did it with the Seahawks. This way you have a chance to end up on a team that needs you (and you know they have room for you) and also you get into a new contract more quickly. Hopefully Kauf is recognized as the stud he is and goes in the upper rounds, if not I hope he goes undrafted and ends up as a dark horse for a good team with a need.

Good point, the lower the round the lower the money. Unless you are picked in the first or second round, these players typically won't make great money until their 2nd contract, if they make it that far. The problem with skill position players like WR's and RB's is that their shelf life isn't too long now a days in the NFL, unless you're a great one.

Hopefully Kauf makes the most of the Combine and gets drafted higher than expected, I think he could be a talent in the NFL.

Keep in mind that's just the cap number. I recall the league minimum salary being 300K or something around there.

On NFL.com, Kauf's got a 68.0 rating, which according to their chart, is top of the 4th round material.

Matt Johnson was rated after he got picked in the 4th, otherwise unranked. Rod Issac of powerhouse Mid Tenn. State was picked 7 spots before Richard Sherman at 147th overall. He lasted a whole year. Russell Wilson, well you know that story. The ratings can only be taken as far as you want, but none of those bloggers, writers, or authors are NFL scouts. They may have "sources" but again, grain of salt. Kauf goes before the 7th in my opinion. Of course a lot depends on his decimals from the combine but there's a lot to like about him and I think a team will take a chance on him earlier than the 7th. Especially those teams with lots of later round picks

If a team likes what they see in Brandons work ethic, character, or other intangibles they are certainly NOT going to broadcast it.

Wonder if BK wold change his mind about leaving for the NFL since he looks like a 5th-7th round pick.

Hard to imagine anyone would have told him to expect being higher than rounds 5-7. We can spend a long time discussing all of his positives- and you can go back through the threads and see no one is a bigger fan than I am- but the NFL will see a history of injuries, a relatively slow 40 time, and numbers put up against non-BCS competition.

Also, the unfortunate reality is the last couple of kids coming out of Eastern- Taiwan Jones and Matt Johnson- have struggled a lot to see the field for different reasons. While there is plenty of upside, there are a lot of question marks that make him a bit of a risk.

In Desmond's draft profile, you can see him covering Kaufman at :29

Insignificant, but I thought it was cool.

*cough* err... I'll just stop talking now.

If the current projections on ESPn are even close to accurate, there's pretty much no chance he'll be drafted. By the 7th pick of the 6th round, he still off the list of "best available wide receivers." Unfortunately, if this is the case, you have to wonder what the scouts were telling him in forgoing his senior season.

Maybe not scouts ... Could he have been overly influenced by agent-types?

No doubt... Players need to understand these agents will say ANYTHING about where they think you'll be drafted and paid to get you to sign. Kids believe the hype without checking it out. These mid-level NFL/CFL-type guys need an agent who really knows how to "sell" a player, not some guy who's "selling to" the player. I know these guys can't legally talk to agents, but if any agent wasn't honest about a 50/50 situation of whether you're going to be drafted or not, that's a terrible agent who isn't plugged in at all to what the teams are thinking.

This is especially true this year with such a WR-heavy draft... while next year looks like a light year for WRs. I never saw a good reason--- either developmentally or in terms of getting paid--- why Kaufman should leave early. That's why I was so shitshocked when he announced he wanted to leave...

I sure hope his decision was based on other factors other then the draft, because it would be a little embarrassing to leave early and not even get drafted.

I think putting up a 4.6+ 40 at the combine screwed him. I hope he gets a good look as a free agent.
