BSC Expansion Announcement on Monday

12 teams in bball would mean 22 conference games and 14 teams in football...uh...its not 100% that the MT's are gone but makes you think they have to be.

a team could have a 20 win season from conference only games.

Why is the University of Utah's mens basketball team having their season tickets promoted on the bottom of this page???!

Montana may be gone, but I doubt it...State isnt' going anywhere. MSU will be a part of the Sky for many years to come. Also, UM's president has been quoted recently as saying that UM is going to maintain the long-standing relationship it has with MSU. MOst of the reason why the Dakotas were invited was UM's request. UM isn't going anywhere. Why would they? Who really would want to be part of the WAC?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Montana move to the WAC, but I think it's a year away at least. They are still completing their feasibility study, trying to figure out where the money to cover the extra expenses will come from, and showing loyalty to MSU (even if it's because they are hearing state regents whisper the two need to be together). The WAC 6 are already tellling Benson that recruiting is starting to take a hit, because other conferences are tellling players that the WAC may cease to exist. Thus, the WAC needs to announce members within this month.

If I was a betting man, I'd guess that a 12 team Big Sky would be split into divisions, as Fullerton has already stated, and teams will play the other teams in their division twice for basketball (10 games), and only one game each in the other division (6). This gives you 16 games, and it reduces the travel.

Football will be a little more sticky. Two 7 team divisions probably means 6 games in your division, and maybe 2 or 3 from the other. The schools at this level need some guarantee games against FBS schools, so I would find it hard to think there won't be 2, but probably 3, OOC games. It's bound to happen, though, that a team will feast on bad teams one season and have a good conference record as a result (while a good team may face the top teams and have an average record). That's the sticky part of it.

Is USD joining?

I know for a fact that UND and SUU are both in, but it wouldn't make much sense having UND if USD didn't want to join.

This is bad news for SDSU and NDSU. They both wanted to join about 5 years ago, but the Sky wasn't interested. Now UND and USD (I guess) are joining...and not just that, but The Sky is a far better conference than the other alternatives (Summit or MVCF). Also, they are the flagship institutions for the respective states.

The announcement was made, North Dakota and souther Utah have joined the Big Sky; south Dakota is still negotiating, but wants to be in the BSC.
Will be a member with the 2012-13 season

Fullerton expects South Dakota to be in by the end of the week and as early as Wednesday. The annoucement was made in the Weber State News studio.

Will be interested in seeing how many conference games each school plays, and what the post-season basketball tournaments will look like. It's going to be a bear to get into the NCAA tournament from a 12-team league, that's for sure.

How about all 12 teams get in, the top 4 get byes, Last 8 teams play, winners play top four teams, then it goes to the semis and then the finals.

This is an example.

end of season rankings
1 Weber
2 Montana
3 Montana St
4 Northern Colo
5 Northern Arizona
6 Port St
7 Idaho State
8 Eastern Wash
9 Sacramento State
10 North D
11 South D
12 So. Utah

Weber, Montana, Montana State, No. Colo have byes.
NAU plays So. Utah- Port St plays South D- Idaho State plays North D and Eastern plays Sac

NAU wins, Port St wins ISU wins and Eastern wins.

Highest remaining seed (NAU) plays 4th place team (UNC)
Second Highest remaining Seed (Port St) plays 3rd place team (MSU)
third highest remaining seed (ISU) plays 2nd place team (UM)
lowest remaining seed (EWU) plays 1st place team (WSU)

last 4 games played at reg season champs home.

semis
Northern Colorado vs Montana
Montana State vs Weber

final
Montana vs Weber

This way it makes the conf tourney longer, and all the teams get in, but they will probably only let the top 8 in

South Dakota is going to the Missouri Valley for football only and to stay in Summit league for other sports

Fullerton says this probably scraps the "division" idea:

if we really go big ten style that means 9 conf games and u dont play 4 teams each year. i know it has benefited teams in the big ten when they had a year that included not playing ohio state and michigan.

13 football
11 bball

there is still a chance the montanas leave.
