I don't really know what to think. Is it good or bad, I don't know yet. :?

Gonzo didnt discuss anything athletic related today, so who knows the outcome.

I wondered if he would... If he's working things behind the scene with Wanless, I'm fine with the "Under the Radar" approach at this point...

We on this board are getting all in a tizzy and excited, but what if he isn't doing anything? Nothing has been mentioned/announced and it is all speculative wishful thinking by us who are setting us up for a big disappointment.

Will this distract from the opener in a few weeks?

You could be right. They may have entirely ruled it out... Or, they could be keeping things on the down-low, guess we'll find out soon.

I doubt this is any kind of distraction to the players. We probably care more about it than anyone else...

BYU staying, if true, doesn't change things for us getting into the WAC. The WAC still needs teams to maintain their FBS status.

It actually improves our chances, because Utah St. will be invited to the MWC, as a 12th member, no way the MWC stays at 11 members, if BYU stays.

So the WAC will be down to 5 schools and holding a sign at a traffic light, Will Work for Football Members.

I agree, USU will get the MWC invite so the MWC can have a championship game which translates into more money for them.

I also agree with GCM, however, I hope my high blood pressure isnt for nothing this week.

I disagree about Utah State, they had their golden ticket and they blew it. I think Houston gets the invite and if they do, I think the WAC stays alive and Wanless and Gonzo pull the trigger.

According to the attached article, as soon as BYU announces they are staying in the MWC, USU will join the MWC.

That's JoePa's argument against taking the Dome into the Big Whatever. Given that the Theismanns are still being talked about over there as if it's "only a matter of time," one could easily see the same thing applying to Utah State and the MWC.

Though if you ask Stew Morrill, he'd probably say that he'd rather have USU in the Big West....

We have seen many reports about USU getting a MWC invitation but very few if any reports about Houston.

But we won't know until the BYU situation is solved, indy or MWC.

I agree. Houston is just a school whose name I saw thrown around on some fan boards but there have not been any articles indicating they would be invited. I just don’t know if USU brings much to the MWC other than their men’s bball program. Since it seems like the main goal of the MWC was to become a BCS conference, I assumed football would be the priority in which case Houston would help them out WAY MORE than USU would.

When the WAC went to a 16 team conf, Houston did NOT come along with TCU, SMU and Rice. They joined CUSA and has stayed there.

Why didn't they join the 16 team WAC? Whatever those reasons were for not joining the WAC, maybe the same reasons for not joining the MWC?

What if Houston gets a Big 12 invitation?

And one place NOT to get information from, is a fan message board.

First off, Houston isn't getting a Big 12 invitation. Even if the Big 12 survives another few years, they still aren't getting an invite.

Second, Houston from 1996 and now are different programs. Houston had a chance to be a big dog amongst minnows in CUSA. It didn't quite pan out that way, but now they are in a great position. They are going to renovate their stadium and arena, making their facilities amongst the best in the nation (well, good enough for the major conferences).

CUSA has nothing more to offer the Cougars. The MWC is becoming a bigger deal. Schools like Boise and TCU are far more alluring than UAB and Tulane. There is also a real possibility the MWC reaches their goal and gets an auto-bid. No chance of that in the CUSA.

MWC is definitely a better destination than CUSA mediocrity. I can see Houston becoming member 11 or 12 (depending on BYU's decision)

JH I honestly couldn’t care less if you bash my opinions, that’s your right and I have no problem with that. But if you are going to bash me feel free to back up your opinions with facts. Fan boards are where you find rumors, inside info, and complete BS all in one stop. You are right, you shouldn’t believe everything and anything from a fan board, but I clearly listed multiple logical reasons why a MWC Houston invite would make sense on page 5 of the “MW invites Fresno and Nevada” thread. Also I don’t see what happened with the WAC and Houston almost 20 years ago having anything to do with what happens between the MWC and Houston today. Sure there could have been some history there but I doubt the Houston AD is saying “You didn’t invite us back then so you should do it today.” The bottom line is the MWC is going to add whoever they feel will strengthen the conference (and bring in more revenue to the conference).

On another note here is an SLC Tribune story about the MWC Commissioners ownage of BYU:

Start reading halfway down when the subject: 'Flexing Mormon Muscle' begins.

"BYU should offer 4-6 football games and all of BYU's other sports to the WAC on the conditions that the WAC members :

1) sign binding loyalty agreements with $10M exit fees that don't disappear if a member leaves.
2) are required to add a minimum of 6 new all-sports members which must be playing all of their sports in the WAC by 2013 with the lone exception of football in which the new members must be playing in the WAC by 2015.
3) are required to be playing split into divisional play in non-football sports by 2013 and in football by 2015.
4) that at least 5 of the new all Sports members need to be in top 75 media markets and name UNT, UTSA, Texas State, Sac State, and Portland State as preferred members."

"Portland State and Sacramento State are large publics in top 25 markets with 20K stadiums in hand who could transition to FBS by 2015. They would be teams 11 & 12 and would complete the Pacific division."

Wow, I could see this happening. There is a large LDS population in Sacramento.
