BYU

Much better effort thus far in the game(end of first half) Had Weber played this hard last game they would have won easily over Denver.

They are playing hard. For the first time Dallas looks like he isn't afraid. Maybe he has turned a corner and keep his aggressiveness going. So far the difference in this game comes when Baker is playing the 4. He just cannot contend with BYU's bigs. They score at will against him. He shouldn't be playing the 4 at all. Hopefully Braxton and Hill will keep the fouls down in the second half and stay in the game. Weber shot poorly in the second 10 minutes (scored only 8 points) and they have got to shoot well in the second half to have any chance.

11-of-26 from the free-throw line. Woof ... 5-for-24 from downtown. I hate to be a naysayer, but I think we're in for a long, arduous season, fellas. If we don't beat UVU and with the first two Big Sky games on the road at the Montanas, we will be damn lucky to not be 3-10 on Dec. 31.

We could have won if we hit our free throws
Right, but I feel like we have this coulda, woulda, shoulda talk every year, as we continue to take it up the tailpipe in all USU and BYU games. We can't even chalk this one up to an anomaly, either. This is the third consecutive season in which we can't hit free throws.

I will take that effort every game. Much better than last game. Tonight they showed there is still some fight left in this group.

Can't argue with that. Randy's teams rarely lay down, even if they play poorly.

FTs were pathetic but more alarming to me was the bigs lack of defensive positioning and awareness. Half of byu's assists came from their bigs going untouched, sometimes unnoticed to the rim. No adjustments I could see-- none. In typical Rahe form, as soon as a zone is spotted, it's gone. That was a tough one to watch because even though it was nice to see much better team play (offensively), that just didn't look like a very good byu team and with a few FTs, threes, and defensive fundamentals, they might have stolen a cheap one.

What is wrong with you guys? Jeremy Senglin has looked like total crap and Cannon gets benched. Cody John turns the ball over, takes bad shots, and makes errant passes and Cannon is the one benched. Senglin is 10-31 in the past two games. He is shooting around 45% from the FT line and has a terrible assist to turnover ratio and yet is on the floor for 37 mins.

Agree, definitely better effort than expected from the Wildcats, but somehow you just knew it would be the same result at the end, what with the poor FT & 3 pt. shooting.

Coach Rose in the post-game interview said his "young" (familiar?) BYU team is just not a very good team yet. He almost seemed disappointed.

Will give the Wildcats credit, they showed desire & energy tonight. :twocents:

I totally agree. Senglin has gotten away with things that other players have not in the past. Has a Wildcat team ever missed 15 free throws in a game before? Jeremy Senglin is a senior and should be held to a higher standard.

Thought it was interesting that Rahe, in his halftime interview, mentioned how good a team BYU is and then in the post-game interview Rose said his team wasn't very good yet. These two coaches work from a base of a totally different standard. Just the latest evidence that Weber athletic admin doesn't expect much from its teams...

Personally I would rather see John and Harding on the floor than Cannon. Cannon can't hit a shot, can't drive and dish and isn't quick enough to deal with opposing guards. With all their mistakes John and Harding at least have the quicks to play "D". And their has been flashes of creativity from them that creates opportunities for others. Something Cannon has shown no penchant for so far this year. I think that John and Harding have more upside and thus are better than Cannon in the long run. I wanna see a fast game, creativity and a shut-down defense. Cannon doesn't bring the traits for this type of game and Harding/John do. Just my opinion...

I'll be honest, I haven't watched the past two games so I'm just looking at the numbers, but doesn't look like Cannon was giving them much at all. Averaging 2.9 pts in 19.4 mins, shooting .227 (5 of 22) from the field and .211 from 3 (4 of 19, meaning he's only made one bucket within the 3 pt line all season), and only 10 assists in 8 games. Gotta have more than that from a starter.

Difference in this one is BYU made their freebies and we didn't.

Kids played hard with a lot of energy but once again poor free throw shooting doomed them.

I have to agree that Cannon's offense has definitely taken a turn for the worse. He is in a definite funk. He isn't driving like he did last year and it seems that his biggest purpose is to set up Jeremy. His shooting is dismal and that could correlate to his somewhat sloppy defense. However, when he is in the game, our offense runs far more smoothly and he is our best perimeter defender. Cody gets burned or is out of position a lot on defense. Yes, on the offensive side of the court he is more creative, but that does come with consequences. Errant passes, bad decisions, and offensive fouls.

The issue though isn't John or Cannon, but Senglin. He is really hurting our team. Thankfully he wasn't as selfish as he was on Saturday, but he still did some absolutely bone-headed things. Passing up an easy two to take a three and then to miss it. Missing freebies, turning over the ball because of his issues with dribbling, running down the clock to get a shot at a three and then finally passing with 15 or less left...the list goes on and on. I don't like how Randy benches Cannon or Ryan because of Jeremy. That is my issue. Its like I'm watching Billy Green all over again. Punish someone who is doing his best because of other player issues. Yes, Cannon needs to hit shots, but it is really pathetic seeing how short his leash is when Senglins is a mile long. It is causing issues with the team. Our chemistry is getting hurt because of Senglin's selfishness. That is the issue. It isn't Cannon, John, or Ryan, but Senglin.

Don't give up on a young player because your damn senior makes a lot of poor decisions.

I'm not sure I watched the same game as those arguing guard play and FTs. Yes, the FT shooting was atrocious but as a team Weber shoots 65% from the line-- not great. If Weber would have shot their percentage, they would have gained at least 6 more points, going 17-26. I agree Senglin has not looked good, however, he did share the ball, something he did not do vs Denver. I like the looks of Harding but he does need time and development to be really good-- game changing good-- and he's going to hurt himself if he keeps going 3' off the floor and hitting the ground. I think all our guards can be effective in helping the team but only if they're used to their strengths and play within a team concept. What I didn't see (nearly as badly) is defensive liability with the guards.

I saw it differently with the post players. Defensively, they were out of position all game long. I estimate 12 times, and that's probably conservative, byu's bigs took a pass and maybe a single step or dribble for a layup or dunk. They were either unguarded, unseen, or in unbelievably good position due to very poor defensive position. Those looks are 100% FG% or at least 24 points. Let's suppose Weber knows how to position or play D in the post, I think it's reasonable to assume the % is cut in half, or 50% and 12 points.

My conclusion: byu -12 > Weber +6, and is in a position to win this game. I truly believe, with this team as much as any, coaching/teaching liability outweighs player deficiency.
