"Big Sky Honors Five
Jon Kasper - Big Sky Conference
9/28/2009

The Big Sky Conference has selected its football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Sept. 26. In a rarity, the league has selected tri-Players of the Week on Offense with Montana quarterback Andrew Selle, Weber State QB Cameron Higgins and Eastern Washington running back Taiwan Jones all sharing the honor. For the second straight week, Eastern Washington linebacker J.C. Sherritt is the Defensive Player of the Week. Portland State’s Aaron Woods is the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Selle, a 6-foot-2, 219-pound junior from Billings, Mont., completed 29-of-38 passes (.763 percent) for a career-high 349 yards and three touchdowns in Montana’s 41-34 overtime victory over Northern Arizona. Selle threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Sam Gratton with 2:37 to play in regulation to give UM a 34-31 lead. He tossed a 25-yard TD pass to Tyler Palmer on the first play of overtime for the game-winning touchdown. This is Selle’s first Player of the Week.

Higgins, a 6-2, 195-pound junior from Kai, Hawai’i, completed 31-of-47 passes (.660 percent) for 410 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in Weber State’s 36-29 road win over Portland State. Higgins led the Wildcats on a six-play, 84-yard drive in 55 seconds, hitting Tim Toone for a 38-yard touchdown with 17 seconds remaining on a fourth-and-3 play. Higgins, a candidate for the Walter Payton Award, completed 4-of-7 passes for 75 yards on the game-winning drive. This is Higgins’ fourth Player of the Week honor.

Jones, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound sophomore from Antioch, Calif., rushed for a career-high 190 yards on just 15 carries and scored four touchdowns in EWU’s 56-30 victory over Sacramento State. Jones averaged 12.7 yards per carry and scored on runs of 38, 37, 12 and 7 yards. He also caught one pass for 20 yards and finished with 279 all-purpose yards.

Sherritt, a 5-10, 210-pound junior from Pullman, Wash., recorded 15 tackles – 2.5 for loss – forced two fumbles and recovered a fumble in the Eagles’ victory over Sacramento State. Sherritt has moved into sixth in the nation in tackles per game with an average of 13.0, which leads the Big Sky. Sherritt ranks eighth nationally in tackles for loss per game with 1.88. This is his second Player of the Week honor.

Woods, a 5-6, 180-pound senior from Portland, Ore., returned a kick 97 yards for a touchdown and finished with 202 kick return yards in Portland State’s near upset of Weber State. Woods’ 97-yard kick return, the second KOR TD of his career, came near the end of the third quarter and closed Weber State’s lead to 28-17. Woods also caught five passes for 128 and caught two touchdowns. Woods’ second TD reception gave PSU a 29-28 lead with 1:15 to play. Woods finished the game with 330 all-purpose yards, the 14-best single-game effort in league history.

Matt Meyers, K, Northern Arizona
Sam McCowan, Ret., Sacramento State
Mike Snoy, P, Weber State "

Good for Cam. But, why doesn't the conference just man up and select one player of the week. Last week co-offensive players of the week and this week tri-offensive players of the week? Tri? That just sounds lame.

Congrats to Kevin Linehan and Mike Snoy, also selected as Big Sky players of the week.

Mike is averaging a fantastic 43.5 yards per punt and 64.2 yards on kickoffs.

Kevin leads the Big Sky with 4 sacks.

Cam has also been named College Sporting News National All-Star for his performance Saturday against Portland St. (I believe that DB from Portland St that missed Cam's last pass to Toone should have also received offensive all-star status. After all, without him, Cats lose and Higgins gets no rewards. Thanks, whoever you are.) "College Sporting News National All-Stars, 9/28/2009

Quarterbacks Ryan Perrilloux of Jacksonville State and Cameron Higgins of Weber State, cornerback Seth Thomas of McNeese State, and kicker Evan Engwall of Stephen F. Austin are the recipients of College Sporting News national Football Championship Subdivision honors for the week ending Sept. 28.

Each of the honorees are listed here with their achievements and their school, position, height, weight, class and hometown.

Ryan Perrilloux, Jacksonville State, QB, 6-3, 223, Sr., LaPlace, LA
In the return to his home state, Perrilloux accounted for five touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) for the second straight week as Jacksonville State pounded Nicholls State 60-10. He finished the game 14-of-22 for 250 yards and four touchdowns (of 17, 44, 14 and 6 yards) and added 58 rushing yards and a score (38 yard rush) to account for 308 total yards of offense in just three quarters of play (he sat out the fourth quarter). He finished with a passing efficiency of 219.09, the third best total in school history. His 181.55 passing efficiency on the season is No. 1 nationally. He became the first Gamecock to post back-to-back five-touchdown games in school history. Perrilloux accounts for 22.00 points/game for his team, the third best total nationally. Perrilloux has been named OVC Offensive Player of the Week three straight weeks, marking the first time a player has done that since now Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo did for Eastern Illinois from Oct. 5-19, 2002.

Cameron Higgins, Weber State, QB, 6-2, 210, Jr., Hawai’i Kai, HI
Higgins completed 31-of-47 passes (.660 percent) for 410 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in Weber State’s 36-29 road win over Portland State.

Seth Thomas, McNeese State, CB, 5-9, 177, So., Orange, TX
Thomas intercepted two passes in a 42-32 loss at Tulane. He ran one back for 39 yards to the Tulane 32. His first pick halted a potential scoring drive and his second one set up a McNeese drive that went to the Tulane 17-yard line before the Cowboys lost the ball on a fumble. Thomas’ brother, Earl, a sophomore safety at Texas, was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week this week after he had two interceptions in the Longhorns’ victory vs. UTEP on Saturday.

Evan Engwall, Stephen F. Austin, K, 6-0, 170, FR, Derby, KS
The true freshman is the nation’s second-rated kicker and scored a career-high 17 points in the Lumberjacks 65-31 victory over North Dakota. He was perfect 3-for-3 on his field goal tries, connecting from 30, 28 and 29 yards, and he was also a perfect 8-of-8 on extra point attempts."
