Can Senglin catch Collins?

Jeremy needs 62 points to pass Bruce as Weber State's all-time leading scorer. If we could at least advance to the championship game, he would have a shot at it. If we don't win the tourney, I don't think it's likely that we'd get invited to a postseason tournament this year, so I wouldn't count on an additional game. Thoughts?

I don't think an invite to the CIT is out of the realm of possibilities, but we would get a lower seed and would probably play on the road for the most of it.

As for Senglin reaching Bruce without a CIT invite, it's possible. Weber would have to make the Championship game for that to be accomplished and Senglin would have to be scoring at the rate he was when conference started. I don't however want him taking a million shots if they aren't falling. If he is off at all I want other players taking the shots. At least to me, Senglin catching Collins is not as important as winning the tournament. So hopefully he's not focusing on that.

I would just like Jeremy to focus on leading our team to victory this week period. If that means scoring lots of points great, if it means facilitating others that is what he needs to do. I think that he has been forcing things the last 2 weeks and it has hurt our team.

His best shot at getting the record might be playing 3 games in Reno and winning the tournament. Going to the play in game and then playing another game against one of the two best teams in the NCAA. It is time for the leader to step up.

This sounds like an ideal scenario. Win the damn tourney AND get your points.

I couldn't agree more. Being the leader doesn't mean scoring all the points. Being the leader means leading the team and doing what is best for the team. I was very impressed with how he played on Saturday. He played within the system. Scored when the defense allowed him to and when the defense keyed on him, he became a facilitator and a decoy so that other guys could score points and the team could succeed.

No matter, I think it'll take at least 3 games for Jeremy to break the record. If Weber wins on Thursday, I'm thinking we will see the Cats next week playing in either the NCAA, CIT or CBI. Weber was the 3rd place team and if they win will have 18 wins. The Sky probably would like to see Eastern win it all. That would get Eastern in the Dance, UND in the NIT and Weber in either the CIT or CBI (Idaho could also get a post-season game if they beat Montana tomorrow). Regardless, Weber has an excellent shot at winning the overall tourney. If Weber plays three games, Jeremy will probably break the record in the Championship Game. I don't want him thinking about records though. You can tell it totally screws with his game when he hears about personal accolades. Think team!! If Weber plays as a team, very few teams can beat the Cats.

I hope Senglin doesn't catch Collins but I do hope he helps the 'cats win in sorry-ass reNO. Collins was the greatest player ever at WSU in my book and I hope his record stands as a nice tribute to his play. Collins was team mentality player and I have mad respect for that, especially with today's selfish attitudes. If I remember correctly there was no 3PT shot during Collins entire career and even though he still wouldn't have been standing on the 3PT line all game, he had to earn more of his baskets against the defense instead of benefiting from being able to launch 3PT attempts at will. I enjoy the 3PT shot being a part of the game but don't enjoy a Golden State type approach to the game. I've really missed an inside game from Weber this year, I hope Chapman and Co. cause that to change next season.

The way SUU defends the outside shot, Jeremy could get half of that amount Thursday night. I'm not saying he will, but he certainly could have a big night. I think Jerrick and Ryan could as well. This may also be a game where we see a little more of Cannon and Baker. If we get a comfortable lead, I think Jeremy will be on the bench, resting up for Friday. That could keep his scoring down. It's hard to score from there.

I thought Senglin played a great game last night. He did have the usual end of half/end of game turnover where all 10 players on the court know who is going to play for the final shot. I liked that he was able to play 8 minutes less than his season average. Hopefully he has plenty in the tank tonight against Eastern. I really liked how much he was feeding Zach in the post. Two more games like last night and he passes Collins.

Well, that happened. Now, how many games will it take him to catch Orlando Lightfoot?

Congratulations Senglin! I'll keep the sight of that shot that put him over the top (Bruce Collins, one of my favorite former players) in mind for a long while. Highlight moment of this game. :thumb:

Not likely, but not impossible. It would take a deep run into the CIT tournament (which I'm 100 percent certain we will be invited to and maybe even host a game). He needs 73 points to pass Lightfoot. Minimum three games in the CIT, where he averages 24 per game ...

In breaking Bruce's WSU record, he has the record that has stood for over 40 years. Lightfoot's record has stood for over 30 years and he is approaching it. So many things have to fall into place for this to happen. It really is remarkable. I've loved watching the young man play and I will love watching the next guy play. :thumb: :thumb:

Anyone else think that Senglin's game resembles Allen Iverson's? Not in talent or ability, just in style of play. I don't know why I had the thought but am curious what others think. It'll be interesting to see what, if any, interest the NBA has in him, or where he ends up playing professionally.

He will get some looks from NBA teams. He is one of the best shooters coming out this year. He is small by NBA standards, but makes up for it with athleticism. As has been pointed out, endlessly, he is not a pure point guard. However, pure point guards do not play in the NBA. They just don't. That is a thing of the past. The prototype now is the high scoring guard who has some ball handling ability. At the NBA level they can all handle the ball well enough to get the job done. The best guards are those who can shoot from range and get to the rim when needed. I don't know that he will get drafted, but he will get a chance to show what he can do.

He will be playing for a pay check somewhere next year. :coffee:
