Can we all agree.......

That Barnum needs to go?

In the several years I have been watching PSU, I have never been impressed by his play calling. He is the most predictable OC in the Big Sky.

I would call for Burton to be gone too, but considering the budget woes and the fact they can't afford to fire him, we are stuck.

You know how close we were to getting Barnum to leave? During the summer he was a finalist for the North Dakota HC job.

The issue I think we have on offense is pretty simple (just my opinion based on what I've seen). I watched Nevada dismantle Wazzu with a straight Pistol offense. I then watched DII Pueblo throttle FCS Sam Houston with a straight Pistol. What we use (and what we have used for the last 5 years), Burton and Barnum have both called it a dual-quarterback, Pistol "hybrid". I can't find any other school at the DI level (FBS or FCS) that uses this type of hybrid offense. I think we need to get back to a straight Pistol offense, and with McDonagh, Penn and Richard running the ball and with Kloss as the primary receiver, I think it would be an improvement over what we have been using. In the pre-game, Mike Lund said that for the first time since 2009, we have thrown the ball more than we have run it. Obviously that is not working. I am no coach, just a fan, being reduced to an armchair quarterback. :twocents:

Quit the gadget playing, trying to make the Pistol into something it is not, and get back to basic Pistol offense.

I've been at every game. We played an excellent first half against the Beavers. Ever since that half we have gotten progressively worse. Honestly. We have gotten worse with each game. Does anyone on the coaching staff read these posts? Does anyone who has access to the coaching staff send them some of these comments? Let's hope so...

1. Improve the play calling. Look at the OSU first half. Look at the WSU second half. Balanced attack. Plays were called in less than 35 seconds so we left the offense with more than 5 seconds to perform. If you can't get the play in then go to a huddle. As stated above go to your basic pistol and stick with it. Stick with SOMETHING. And can we train our guys to run North-South for crying out loud. The line can open holes. We don't need bouncing ballerina's running the ball. anyone watch Vega last night when we tried something out of desperation?

2. Anyone figure out by now we don't have accuracy down the field in our passing game? Jeez. Run short routes. Run more slants. Go to a two tight end set. We could sure use more blocking to seal the edges. Then you have more targets that can spring loose in the middle. Our pass protection has been great. When we try to pass more than 10 yards we look like fools. We don't have that talent. Figure out how to use what we have.

3. How can we have a "next man up" mentality when we don't give time to the second string younger guys to get some playing time. In the two games that have been 4-5 touchdown leads late in the fourth quarter we don't let the young guys in. I've never seen other successful programs do that. The younger guys learn nothing in the heat of battle and then we are going to be surprised when they don't contribute? We risk injury to starters late in games that are already decided and have no development of their backups. We are all excited we scored 14 points against Cal Poly's second string last night???

4. Don't treat this as a buy week. The team has got to find their intensity again. Coaches have two weeks to turn this program around. Get this team going coaches. And for the record I think your "go at 75%" command for practices is exactly what we get in the games. Strap on the pads and show some intensity at practice. Other than OSU we have started every game flat. We are not a pro team that can go light during the week and bring the intensity for the weekend.

5. And coaches stop worrying about your future. The guys on team don't need to hear that. They need to hear how you are going to turn this program around. Whether you have one season or 10 in your future. Stop yelling at the players and coach them. Inspire them. Understand their talents and use what you have. This is not rocket science. Just drown out all the negative Nelly's out there and be the coaches these kids need. Get in a locked room together. Maybe some of you don't come out. Fine. Watch game film of the first half against OSU and the second half against WSU. Just make the hard decisions now and USE THE TALENT WE'VE GOT.

Time for June Jones to step in OC. He has resigned his job at SMU. He'd be a great upgrade for Offensive Coordinator. He has made enough money to retire and would probably be willing to do it at PSU's nearly pro bono salary rate.

Barnum go bye-bye now. The circus called and they could really use you.

Rumors I've been hearing is that Jones will be the next HC...after Hersh is named AD.

Unfortunately I think at this point there won't be much anyone can do to bolster KM's confidence at QB. From what I've seen, he seems to be always teetering on the edge. His passing has not improved (how many times does he overthrow the receiver by 5 feet?), he doesn't hit the line like he did his Freshman year. I just think he's gotten the most out of his football talent that he can.

Anyone that has ever played sports any level reaches their maximum talent level at some point and I think KM has reached his. This is not meant to diminish him, it's just a an observation, I think he's as good as he's going to get. If they can come up with a scheme that effectively uses the talent he has, maybe something can be saved, if not, we may win two games this year.

June Jones is not coming here. He's on the beach in Hawaii and I'm pretty sure that's where he's going to stay. 8-)

One could say that we probably should have been up 17-13 at the half of the OSU game, but we got a tad bit lucky in the first half. OSU gave us a big play to Penn on our first scoring drive and 53 penalty yards on our second scoring drive. Other than that I don't think we looked that good, other than making less errors than OSU. Better than the train wreck that was the second half, but not great.

I was impressed with our offense out of the gate in the second half at WSU. Good success in the short passing game that they went to. Seemed to work, and like you said, stick with something (especially if it works!).

That being said, the offense just seems to be a wreck. UC Davis on the 4th will be interesting. I think we'll know a lot when we walk out of the stadium on that Saturday night. If we can't show some progress on the offensive side of the ball, I think we'll be looking at a long season for the guys in green and white...

And black...

And camo...

Definitely need to get some shorter passes in there because the pass accuracy is terrible as it stands now. Doesn't help the run game when the opposing team can stack the box.

I agree with much of what has been said here. The passing accuracy is just not there to justify not running more, whether that be with our true RBs, or with Penn. I realize you still have to pass a little to keep the defense honest, but let's stop pretending that KM's arm is the answer.
