Can we pull a Mountain West on the Big Sky?

I am not super stoked with the growing Big Sky. I suggest we take the 4 remaining charter schools, Sac St, and PSU or EWU (probably PSU, this would be a better basketball conference with them over EWU, and I really don't like the red turf) then merge into a new conference with WAC members Idaho, Hawaii, SJSU, USU, and NMSU. Let LA Tech move on to some other eastern conference.

Six former BCS teams keeps the auto bid for the NCAA tournament.
Rivals:
UM/MSU
USU/Weber
Sac/SJSU
ISU/Idaho

No natural rivals for PSU, Hawaii, or NMSU.

Leaves the Big Sky with:
SUU (sorry)
NAU (switch with ISU... gives NMSU a rival)
EWU
UND
UNC
Cal Poly and UC Davis Fball only

Lastly I get to be commissioner

The problem with letting La Tech leave is the WAC will lose FBS status. They need 6 teams that have played together for five years to keep FBS status. I dont think the remaining 5 teams want to drop to FCS.

No they wouldn't want FCS status, but since I am commissioner I use my charm and get an exemption for the new conference to have FBS status.

So what is the new conference name?

No offense Weberites but NO NMSU fans want to drop to FCS football even though we have sucked for so long. Our facilities our superior to 99% of the FCS teams and our FBS mid-major level. We will stay at FBS. However, I do think taking some teams from the WAC and combining some Big Sky schools along with North Dakota State from the MVC would make a good FBS conference at the level of at least the Sun Belt and the MAC. Here would be the new conference:

NMSU
Weber State
Utah State
Denver (non-football)
UT-San Antonio
Texas State
Idaho
La Tech
San Jose State
North Dakota State

FBS football sucks guys. Sorry. I would love to see Montana in the mix but to many pee brains want to stay FCS over in Montana.

you have great facilities, a decent stadium, you just can't win games and have hardly any fans. and Las Cruces, that leaves a lot to be desired, even El Paso has more excitement. not to mention the fact that you're pretty much bankrupt, but hey.....you're a D1 school...woooo hoooo. even Hawaii smoked you guys with their RB going off for 327 yards on 19 carries....great D

congrats on staying in D1-A and losing every dollar you might have earned....

I don't know where you got your moronic information wildcat4life but I see I inspired you to create a user name and write your first post. Too bad it's stupid and not based on fact. NMSU AVERAGED 17,000 at home with a top crowd of 24000. Not bad for a horrible program. The program is hopefully going to improve but FCS football is still a joke. Your info that the program is bankrupt is also false.

If we scheduled a couple of FCS schools our record would be a lot better. NO ONE at NMSU wants to go down to FCS football. But you continue playing in your high school stadium and averaging 4000 a game in Weber, playing Div. II schools and getting your a$$ kicked every year in basketball by Utah State and BYU. I thought having Weber would be good for the WAC but your football program can't even get 10000 for a game. Utah State fans think Ogden is a dump and are in no way in favor of inviting Weber to the WAC.

P.S. Even $hitty FBS football has this kind of support: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-A_RKd2kbgU&feature=player_profilepage

Your post started so well, until you decided to exaggerate just like wildcat4life. I'm so disappointed in you.
Let me show you where you fell short in your argument.

1. I guarantee Weber could compete with NMSU in football and basketball, case in point, 2009 season we lost by a touchdown to Wyoming and fumbled on the 20 yard line and lost by 1 to Colorado State. Wyoming went to a bowl game that season.

2. Winning for more than half of the game in Logan in the Spectrum in basketball and losing by 7 is not get our butts kicked every year in basketball to Utah State. We beat them 2 years ago in Ogden. BYU beat us only by 6 with our projected first round pick out for the year with a broken foot.

3. Football attendance averages around 8,000 fans with Weber State University leaving the student section unaccounted for. Students get in free and only need to show their Weber ID to get into the game. There are no turnstiles to keep track of attendance. Current attendance figures for both football and basketball are only based on tickets sold to the public.

4. Weber State has not played a Division II in football since 2008. They won 60-6. We also played Dixie State because they are an in-state school and 2008 was the 12 game regular season, so we added them.

5. Weber State plays Utah State next year in football, I think your opinion of the quality of football we play will change drastically. I'm not saying we will win, I think we can but IF we lose it will be by less than 14 points... guaranteed. Come back and call me out if I am wrong.

6. GUARANTEED... WSU could have beaten New Mexico the last couple of years in football.

Slow clap for champ...

I hate to say it, but the WAC is done. I feel bad for NMSU, USU, San Jose, and La Tech, really they deserve better than what Benson has given them, but unfortunately, and its hard to admit, they are part, if not the entire problem behind the recent WAC woes. I hope that the Sun Belt, MWC, MAC, and CUSA make some concessions and opens spots for the four. Idaho, well, the Big Sky is big enough to let the Vandals back in. Honestly, I think the other four have a great chance of getting invites to other FBS conferences. I wouldn't doubt if the MWC invites NMSU and USU. In all reality, I bet its only a matter of time before the MWC announces more additions. They need a couple more schools.

As for our high school facilities... I take complete offense to that Aggie. I know you are a loyal fan of your school and program and I applaud that. But to say your facilities are better than Weber is laughable at best. Yes, your football stadium may be able to hold more fans, but it isn't nice. Stewart is a very nice stadium and one of the best in the FCS. After the summer improvements there will only be a handful of FCS and lower tiered FBS (NMSU is in this bracket) that have nicer stadiums. As for the DEE...IT IS FAR NICER THAN ANYTHING IN THE WAC. The Spectrum is a total hole compared to the Dee. As for the USU fans on their board, unless you've been to both Logan and Ogden you would never know how idiotic the USU fans sound. I've read their comments and can't stop laughing at how dumb they can be. Logan will never be able to compare with Ogden. They treat Weber like Utah and BYU treats them. USU is afraid of letting Weber join the WAC, because Weber is on the same level as they are now, by putting us in the same conference they'd be admitting what is already a fact.

Your arguements are right guys. Wildcat just got under my skin. If you look on the WAC boards, this board and our own board I have been wishing you guys to join the WAC. Utah State fans are very against it but I think Weber State has the potential to be a WAC member. Does your administration say that is perhaps in the future?

P.S. Anyone have pictures of the sky suites at Stewart Stadium?

Aggie,

I emailed our AD over the summer when the conference re-alignment was at a peak. He said WSU is not ready to make the jump to FBS yet, but at a future date it is a possibility. Will it happen, who knows... I for one would like to make the leap and see better teams at WSU both for football and basketball.

FIgured as much, no hard feelings.

Weber needs to pull its resources and get out of the dying FCS. Here are some posts from the WAC board that I think hit the nail on the head:

It's unfortunate but FCS football doesn't seem to be gaining any ground in terms of relevance on the national sports scene. Only 13,000 showed up to watch EWU win today's championship game. Television coverage was more focused on a meaningless Cotton Bowl. Nationally, attendance at FCS games averages only 8,000, and fewer than a dozen schools average 15,000 or more. I think Texas State and UTSA are smart to be moving up, regardless of how the WAC drama plays out. As for Montana... less smart.

"The Football Championship Subdivision is the highest level of college football with a playoff. Eastern Washington finished the regular season at No. 1 and Delaware was No. 5; however, the Blue Hens had been No. 1 before losing their final game of the regular season.

The game drew 13,027 fans to this suburb north of Dallas. This is the first of a three-year commitment to Frisco after 13 straight years in Chattanooga, Tenn."

13,027 attendance for a 'national championship' college football game...........
FCS is dying a slow painful death.........
hope they had enough money to pay the refs....
