Causeway Classic Football Thread

Looks like the annual discussion about the relative value of each school's education, mental stability, affection for barnyard sex, etc. is well in hand on other threads. While that valuable work is carried on by those best equipped to sling effective sh!tballs, how about a discussion about the game itself? There is a lot of football knowledge here, and I'd like to see what you folks think about the nuts and bolts of this contest.

The Hornets are playing very well lately, albeit inconsistently, which has been noticed and remarked on throughout the conference. The team went into to MSU and played hard nosed ball against a hard nosed team, under conditions the Cats hoped would favor them. It's a shame they lost, but we seem to be getting to a place where other teams know they are in for a football game when they step on the field.

The Davis schedule was weaker overall, but they played some tough teams-----and played Boise State very tough. The passing attack is a potent threat. They have a good football team. But if we play the way we have played in our best outings, and both the offense and defence puts together their "A" game at the same time, this can be a memorable game and win. I'm not sure I felt that way a month ago.

SD, how about a preview of this one. I have enjoyed your take on things for previous games. You can always go back to making the moderators crazy on the other threads.

By the way, Sac Rat, are you OK? You can get up for this one, right? Been pretty quiet over there.

My key, note that is singular, to the game in one word: turnovers!

The team with the fewest turnovers will win the game. I think we are pretty evenly matched but we cannot give up the ball if we expect to win. That's what killed us against MSU and it will do the same thing with UCD. Take care of the ball and the game is ours to win.

That and who can sack who. That was also the difference in crunch time at MSU.

Thanks DC, I really hadn’t planned on doing one as I have been getting railed on for being winded and providing obvious straightforward criticism of the defensive play calling. I was only going to post a tirade about how this is s huge rivalry (relatively speaking) and if a player can’t get up for this game, they should just pack it in and go home, but since you asked, here it is:

The key to this game is like no other, get pressure on their QB. Denham is a remarkable playmaker and can control a game when given the chance, that’s why the Hornets need to not give him that chance. As DC mentioned, they do have talent and are a competitive team regardless of the subpar opponents they have played. If the D-line comes out and plays well and controls the line of scrimmage and can knock Denham off his rhythm, the Hornets will do just fine. I feel he is there only real threat. “the farm extension” has only averaged 90.8 YPG on the ground compared to 271.3 YPG through the air. The Hornets have faced many pass happy teams this year so this is nothing new for them. As a side note, “the farm extension” has run the “Wildact” (or “wild gay horse” in this case) a few times this year. I think it would be great if they ran this in the game. Not only is taking the ball out of the hands of Denham a completely stupid move on their behalf, but they simply don’t have the explosive talent at RB it takes to run this type of offense. Their “wild gay horse” formation plays into the weakest aspect of their offense, the running game.

On the defensive side of the ball, “the farm extension” is giving up a meager 201.6 YPG through the air but is allowing 133.1 YPG on the ground. This is where the difference in this game will be made. The Hornet O-line has the ability to control this game. If they come out motivated and aggressive, the Hornets can and will shove the ball right down the phaggies throats. It’s that simple. Yes we are banged up at RB, but running behind this line almost negates that. If the Hornets get a dominating running game going, it will control the clock, keep Denham on the bench and force the phaggie D to bring 8 in the box. This will set up the pass as well as force the secondary to play one-on-one with the talented Hornet WR’s.

As HHD stated, turnovers will be key as they are in every game. Whoever is QB for this game will need to not make mistakes that lead to INT’s. Both teams haven’t had many penalties this year, so unless there is a bad officiating crew who calls everything, I don’t expect to see many penalties.

On the special teams side, “the farm extension” is only averaging 4.6 yards per punt return. The Hornet coverage teams should fair well in this game if they stay in their lanes and stick to their assignments. They will need to prevent any big plays or returns from happening which shouldn’t be a problem if they continue playing the way they have. On the kicking side, they have a capable kicker who is 12 of 15 on FG’s for the year. He has made one from 50+ yards this season so he has range. But no matter how you slice it, their kicker is still not as good as Diniz who is 11 of 12 for the year.

With all that said, the Hornets should win this one. If the defense can minimize the damage Denham is sure to inflict, then the Hornets will have this one in the bag. I am looking forward to a dominating performance by the O-line which will be the difference in this game.

F#%* davis!
GO HORNETS!

Just thought I'd show you guys the logo for this year - I designed this year and a couple others for past years too. I don't think they are making any tshirts or anything though...

Nice.

How about designing a kick ass fvck davis t-shirt? I’d buy that for sure. Nothing will ever top the shirt for the 2003 game. I need to post a photo of that shirt.

just spoke with an Aggie coworker and talking about the game. this guy follows the team religiously, and he doesn't like their odds this weekend....said they are all banged up (like most teams this time of year), but also feels like they've peaked. food for thought, hopefully he's right!

I agree with your co-worker. The UCD'er team has put themselves all-the-way-in to their win against the Must’stains and their three conference wins for the title. Laughing out LOUD!!!!!! You can do it! Davis! Three wins, whooooh!

I saw about a zillion "[Bleep] Davis" tees today. In fact, I was flat out shocked at how many girls were wearing them. Some were professionally done and others were hand-made. Most used a pre-printed UC from the official school name and surrounded it with some sort of "F" and "K".

You know me. As much as I hate Davis, I didn't like those shirts. But given that we won, that's all that matters.
