By Craig Haley, FCS Executive Director

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Nobody can say Eastern Washington football is feasting on too many cupcakes while it celebrates its first FCS national championship.

Consider the Eagles' 2011 schedule:

They play their first three games on the road - at the University of Washington, South Dakota and Big Sky Conference rival Montana.

The home opener? Yeah, it's against Montana State, which whipped EWU, 30-7, last season.

...

EWU has a very tough schedule this year, extremely tough road games and only 4 home games. But great teams rise to the challenge. Which is what the Eagles did last year.

What are the rules as it pertains to contact? Who amongst the coaching staff are allowed to have contact with players at this time? Are any workouts organized or all "on your own"? How do players stay on task and not lose focus as far as their conditioning is concerned?

Good questions. I am sure some others might be able to comment, but from what I understand, most of the players are staying on over the summer to work together in the off-season. I am sure the coaches are allowed to have "contact" with the players, just nothing organized. So basically, it's on the players as to how much or how little they want to do. Personally, I think the work ethic displayed by the players last summer had a lot to do with our success this year. I expect much the same this summer. Check out the video section to see the levels of motivation of these guys. :thumb:

have we ever had only four games in Cheney? I like the fact that we got a counter for that unfilled slot but it just seems like we could have had some other options other than going to South Dakota.

Doubt that anyone "likes" it but when browsing through other BSC schedules I like it better than the Grizzlies 6 home game schedule, heres why.
If the Griz start the season @ 0-4, which is a real possibility, they only have 6 D1 games left so the chance for an at large berth is doubtful. Lets say they split w/ CP and the Eagles so start the season @ 1-3, including a loss at Sac State. They still need to win out and that includes beating the Bobcats in Bozeman to get to 7 D1 wins, again not likely. They have a game against a DII opponent late in the year that could be fun for the fans to watch but is the game they need against a D1 team. I'd rather have a road trip to a D1 school.

FYI, we have never before only played four games that were officially "home" games... although we have had seasons where we only played once or twice in Cheney on account of having our primary home site at Albi Stadium. About 25 years ago, all home games were at Albi with the exception of homecoming.

I really don't like the idea of playing only four homers... even if it meant bringing in a D-II as the fifth home game. What's worse, I don't like going to South Dakota to play in a dome. Having a cupcake (and I don't mean Central) on the schedule is good because it allows you to work through the full rotation of players and lessen any injury risk.

That said, and I hate to count on this, maybe we're good enough that Chaves and Baldwin figured USD was going to be a cupcake even on the road. But yeah, if we lose to UW and then again at USD, this season might be over beofre we even get a home game. It's a definite gamble and for the amount USD is paying, it doesn't seem like it's worth it.

This is a hard one. The reality is that we don't really know what the situation was exactly re: this year's schedule. We might have had someone lined up originally that backed out, I don't know. I don't mind going to USD on the road, because it is a winnable game. What I do have a problem with is that we should have at the very least made it a home and home agreement.

I really don't even think the payout was a factor in this - I honestly believe that they felt that a schedule full of Division I counters was the best way to make it back to the playoffs, even if we have to bite the bullet and go on the road to accomplish that.

I don't want to sound over-confident or like an arrogant fan, but I think we beat USD. I don't think the score will be that close. To that end, the schedule won't really be too much of an issue.

The other thing that is positive is that we've never really been a team that struggles playing on the road. We haven't been scared to go on the road and lay the smack down on someone, even in the playoffs.....See Southern Illinois, McNeese State. :thumb:

We'll be fine.

We will, and it won't be. Cal Poly late in the season is the game we have to worry about. :twocents:

I don't like having but 4 home games period. We play so well at home and it seems we give that little extra something that gets us the win. I believe we had quite a few balls bounce our way culminating in a NC. It seems like teams need to capitilize on breaks/calls/lucky bounces to win tough games and we had our fair share, no doubt about it. We indeed have a really challenging schedule and we'll need some of that "special help" to make the playoffs/win the BSC crown and advance deep into the playoffs again. We have the talent and coaching to do just that!

One good thing about our schedule is we have a bye before the CP game.
Two more bad things about our schedule is NAU has a bye before their game with us, as does Sac State.
Portland plays a very difficult game  vs Willamette before EWU.

The bye before traveling to CP is part of what worries me. In the past, we've come out a little flat after the bye... even last year with SUU at home, we were getting all we could handle until Hoffman and Kaufman put the game away late. SLO is always a tough place to play, and they will have a good team this year. I think it helps to have a game every week to stay sharp, granted a bye late in the season helps a lot with general fatigue and injuries.

General team health was my thought, but you are right, sometimes a bye week can work against you at least in the 1st half

We'll be fine.

Hmmm, don't know what happen there but what I meant to say was, I agree with you that the mental aspect of a week off can show in the first half of the next game. As you know the benefit of a week off is to get healthy and physically refreshed.

The first four games to open last year don't look much different than the first four this year. Sure, we've got three straight road games to start, but there's a lot of upside too. In my mind, the Bobcats are the biggest threat in the BSC this year and we get them at home to start the season. We could go one and three to start, run the table, and still have a home playoff game. If we split the first four and run the table, we've got a really high playoff seed. Compare this season's first four to last season's.

2010 2011
UNR @ UNR Washington @ Washington
Central WA @ Seattle South Dakota @ South Dakota
Montana @ EWU Montana @ Montana
MSU @ MSU MSU @ EWU

Playing the Montana schools in the order we have them this year is in my opinion much easier than the order we had them last year. The two other games in my opinion aren't much different. It could even be argued that Nevada and Central last year were tougher matchups than UW and South Dakota this year.
We've already been to the top of the FCS mountain, why not build a tower on it then fly an Eagle flag from it by winning four straight to start? If ever there were a time to raise the bar even higher, it's now.
