Eastern Washington University Athletic Director Bill Chaves has been honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) as one of 28 winners of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award (ADOY) announced on Monday (June 10). Chaves, 47, is concluding his sixth year of the helm of the EWU athletic department.

Chaves will receive his award during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on Saturday, June 15 at NACDA's 48th Annual Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla.

"This is a tremendous honor for the work that has been done by our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” said Chaves. “We also would not have success without the support of the Eastern Board of Trustees, President Dr. Rodolfo Arevalo and the entire Eastern community.”

Chaves has brought stability, progressive leadership and innovation to Eastern since his arrival in 2007. His tenure has been punctuated by the installation of the first red synthetic football surface world-wide in 2010. After garnering tremendous attention for EWU with this installation, the football team promptly went undefeated (8-0) on the turf en route to the program’s first-ever FCS national title.

I'm sure Dopa will have something to say about this.

With such a great resume, I bet there are several big, and great institutions that will want his services. I just hope they call soon. He has never had an interest in the EAA and its efforts, and no interest in communicating with us lowly supporters about what is happening within the Eagle athletics, except when he thinks it is in his best interest and he wants something out of the EAA. He is at an activity for only the minimum time necessary and phoof he is gone. Good or bad, I am sure there is a much better school than EWU for Mr. Chaves. because that is the only way he is leaving Eastern right now. He has the support of the Presidents office.

I say:
CONGRATULATIONS Bill!! Eastern is lucky to have a leader of your caliber, and I appreciate your leadership and vision. Those, and many other qualities have made Eastern Athletics a leader in its class.

Don't you think he's got just a few things on his plate as the athletic director? Obviously he's doing something right as you look at where EWU was in 2007 and where it is now just 6 years later. Call me crazy, but I'd say that with the progress of our programs, and all the additions to our facilities in his tenure, he's doing something right!!! Congrats, Bill!

AD types are sometimes tough to like because by nature, they have got to be glad handers, work a room like they've just been married making everyone feel appreciated, but not affording to really spend much time with anyone. That being said...

Cleaned up NCAA compliance
Fought the NCAA and won
Red Turf
National exposure
National Championship
Retention of National Championship coaching staff
Massive increase in regional marketing
Getting the ball rolling on the Gateway

Congratulations Bill!

Couldn't agree more and have to add that all my interactions with him have been pleasant and he seemed sincerely interested in the topics under discussion. Very approachable and a good representative of the University.

Video boards for football and basketball as well. I'll also add that every time I've emailed him, he's responded in a timely manner and answered my questions/thoughts.

Way to go Bill...putting in work and it shows...now, about the Football schedules...please look at Alabama,Florida,Ohio State or Notre Dame for future games, they look like nice places to visit.

Always nice when EWU can get recognized for an award like this. Football must weigh heavily on the decision because EWU didn't have the greatest showing in our other sports this year, mens or womens.

I have heard the good and the bad about Chaves and I have my compliments and complaints (mainly scheduling) but overall I think he has done a good job. It always helps when your #1 sport wins a national championship...

Nice to see the recognition, congrats Bill.

Cool... He seems like a nice guy.

He sure can't make a schedule for shit, though.

Really, there are still a lot of programs at EWU that still need a lot of improvement. I couldn't even tell you the last time Eastern fielded a volleyball team worse than what they trotted out last year... but I think Chaves made the right hire to turn that around. Men's basketball is still abysmal, but our women seem to be better than they've been since the late 80s.

Of course, the REAL measures for Chaves are maintaining the success of the football program and completing the stadium project. If both of those happen, he definitely deserves the award.
