Get a win!

This game is winnable - they have talent, but are inconsistent. If Weber shows up and plays hard, they have a real chance. According to Sagarin Predictor, Cincinnati will be about a 7 point favorite.

God bless Waldo and his optimism, but conventional wisdom says we have no business staying within 30 point of Cincy. (that said, I was in Tallahassee for Michigan State and Seattle for North Carolina, so I’m a believer.) But Cincy’s worst wins are teams we’d be lucky to beat. They’ve played Pitt, Xavier, and West Virginia all very tough. We played UNLV tough, but lost to Seattle, Portland State, Montana, and UCSB. I’ve completely lost confidence in this team, but maybe coach Rahe and ESPN2 can motivate the cats can hang with a team that has struggled with inconsistency.

I dont care who we play, I'll always have support for my Wildcat teams. Just go out and have fun and show CInncy what your made of.

The University of Cincinnati didn’t want the season to end with West Virginia’s Da’Sean Butler banking in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end its Big East Tournament run.

Although the Bearcats will not be playing in the NCAA Tournament, their season isn’t over just yet.

Sunday night it was announced that the National Invitation Tournament had selected UC to join its 32-team field.

The No. 2 seed Bearcats will face 7th seed Weber State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Arena. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

"It would’ve been a tough way to end the season, to not get to play again," said UC head coach Mick Cronin. "This is a new chapter for us. We’re excited to play again in front of our fans."

The NIT Final Four will be held March 30-April 1 at Madison Square Garden, the site of the Bearcats’ Big East Tournament run that largely was responsible for them clinching a postseason bid.

"We’re going to attack the NIT with the same mindset that we went into the Big East Tournament with," Cronin said. "Our goal is to win the tournament. We’re going to talk about what we need to do to get back to New York."

Illinois, Arizona State, Virginia Tech and Mississippi State, which lost in overtime to Kentucky in the SEC title game on Sunday, earned No. 1 seeds.

North Carolina, the defending NCAA Tournament champion, received a No. 4 seed in the NIT, marking the second time in three years that the defending champion has missed the NCAA Tournament.

UC (18-15) was one of five Big East Conference schools to get NIT bids, along with Connecticut, St. John’s, Seton Hall, and South Florida. Earlier Sunday, eight Big East teams earned NCAA Tournament berths.

"It’s mind-boggling," said Cronin. "The proof is tonight. If we could’ve gone 9-9 in the league, we could’ve been the ninth team (in the NCAA Tournament). It shows how hard it is to compete in our league."

Weber State (20-10) won the Big Sky Conference regular season title before losing by one point to Montana in the tournament championship game.

The Wildcats ranked second in the Big Sky with 79.9 points per game. Conference Player of the Year Damian Lillard leads them with 20.7 points per game.

"I don’t know a lot about Weber State," said Cronin. "I haven’t seen them play. I heard we were picked to be upset on ESPNU. I’ll be sure to remind our players of that."

After closing the regular season by losing 7 of 9 games, UC got on a roll in the Big East Tournament, beating Rutgers and Louisville before dropping the heartbreaker in the quarterfinals on Butler’s dramatic heave.

Prior to its late-season struggles, UC was projected as a potential NCAA Tournament team, particularly after victories over Vanderbilt and Maryland in the Maui Classic in late November.

"Going to the NIT is not what the guys had envisioned," Cronin said. "We were confident we could get the job done and get to the NCAA Tournament."

The Bearcats have made nine NIT appearances, the last coming in 2006 when they reached the quarterfinals under interim head coach Andy Kennedy.
UC is 7-9 all-time in the NIT.

The Bearcats’ last postseason appearance was in 2008 when they lost to Bradley in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.

UC has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2005, Bob Huggins’ final season.
If the Bearcats win, it could set up a second-round matchup with Dayton. The Flyers received a No. 3 seed and will face 6th-seed Illinois State on Wednesday night.

"Whenever you can win games in March it’s a good habit to create for your program," Cronin said. "That’s what college basketball is all about. Now that we have this opportunity, we have to make the most of it."

UC Men's Basketball to Face Weber State in First Round of NIT
Bearcats selected to program's 10th NIT
March 14, 2010

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team earned its 10th trip to the National Invitational Tournament on Sunday, as the Bearcats received an at-large bid from the tournament selection committee. UC will face Weber State (20-10) from the Big Sky Conference at home on Wednesday, March 17, at 7 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.

Wednesday's game will be televised live on ESPN2. In addition, Voice of the Bearcats Dan Hoard and color analyst Chuck Machock will have the call 700 WLW with the pre-game show beginning 30 minutes before tipoff. The radio broadcast also is available live on www.GoBEARCATS.com.

The Bearcats finished the regular season with a record of 18-15, its second consecutive winning season under head coach Mick Cronin. The Bearcats are led by the trio of 2010 BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the year Lance Stephenson (12.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg), senior guard Deonta Vaughn (11.1 ppg, 3.4 apg), and sophomore forward Yancy Gates (10.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg).

The Illinois Regional bracket also includes #1 Illinois (19-14) at #8 Stony Brook (22-9), #6 Illinois State (22-10) at # 3 Dayton (20-12), and #5 Tulsa (23-11) at #4 Kent State (23-9). The top-seeded team plays host in the first three rounds. Should the Bearcats advance, they will welcome the winner of the Illinois State-Dayton game into Fifth Third Arena.

The other No. 1 seeds in the 2010 NIT are Arizona State (22-10), Mississippi State (23-11), and Virginia Tech (23-8).

UC's opponent, Weber State, owns an overall record of 20-10 and claimed the Big Sky Conference regular-season championship before falling in the championship game of its league tournament, 66-65, to Montana. Weber State is coached by Randy Rahe who is in his fourth year mentoring the Wildcats. Weber State is making its second straight and third appearance overall in the NIT.

The Wildcats rank second in the Big Sky Conference in scoring, averaging 76.6 ppg, and boasting the league's MVP and leading scorer, Damian Lillard, who averages 19.7 ppg. Franklin Session leads the team in rebounding with 6.0 rpg.

Wednesday's meeting between UC and Weber State will be the first meeting between the schools.

This is Cincinnati's 10th appearance in the NIT and it owns a record of 7-9. The tournament, which began in 1938, is the oldest in college basketball and was the first national postseason collegiate tournament to be played in the country, predating the NCAA Tournament by one year.

The Bearcats last trip to the NIT came in 2006 as it advanced to the quarterfinals, knocking off Charlotte (86-80) and Minnesota (76-62) before losing to South Carolina (65-62). UC has made it to the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden once in program history, finishing third in 1955.

Reading all the articles shows how far outside of the mainstream media Weber State is. This could be a good thing. The most known factor seems to be the Conference Player of Year is Damian. This is a great opportunity for the rest of the team to show up as defenses seem to be geared for stopping Dame (double teams and delayed triples). Good passing and good shot selection will be key in this game. We will need to have the offensive rebounding we had in the first half of the Montana game--another big key in this game. Looking forward to a great game! Go 'Cats! (the ones from Weber State, that is!).

i'd say that unfortunately the most known fact about weber state is they lost a 22 point lead in their conference championship :(

I'm with ESPNU-I'm expecting Weber to pull off an upset!

The Big Sky is 3-15 all-time in the NIT. A Big Sky team is playing in the NIT for the 13th time. Weber State is 1-2 all-time in the NIT, with the victory coming at home in 1984 over Fordham.

not shooting a freethrow for the first 27 minutes is a crock, Randy Rahe had every right to be pissed, Panos did get fouled on that play, the Call on Hansen when the Cinncy turned and fell down on his face and they called a foul on Hansen who didnt even touch him, Hansen was sitting on his butt how could he have fould him. And the foul on Bullinger when he stripped the ball out of thier gaurds hands, I sceamed at the refs at the top of my lungs on that, that call was a crock Not to mention calling the bumping only one way.

The refs where one sided, 22 turnovers is unforgivable, but, yes there is a but, We held with them all the way, the only time we didnt was at the end of the first half when they went on that 20-6 run, no I dont think that team was all that much better than we were, the boys played hard, shot the ball fairly well. And I got tired of listening to that color comentary guy call Lillard Dillard.

Now im only cheering for 4 teams. the one Im cheering for the most isnt even in the big dance, Go Northern Colorado, next Im Cheering for Florida, and after that Im cheering for Texas A&M and last but not least its a 2 sided ordeal, Im cheering for both Montana and N.Mexico, If Montana wins great, but it wont break my heart if N. Mexico blows them away.

Weber lost that game. Weber could have won, but didn't play to their potential. Cincy did do two things great. Their full-court was executed extremely well, Weber has broken presses like that before I don't understand tonights effort, and they shot the 3 very well. The Best they've shot it all season...No matter, Weber was with them for most of the night. I'm glad that the Cats didn't stop playing hard. I had to wonder about some of those no-calls at the end of the first half. Interesting...

No matter..Gotta play 40min. Once they finally do this, Weber will be unbeatable.

I think Cincy has a great team. We just didn't play the way we had the rest of the season. I hope Cincy wins the tourny.
