This is an article from the Spokesman-Review and a great article that helped me understand this transfer portal game going on in all sports.

The big concern is if Eastern doesn’t manage this right, and so far it couldn’t be worse, then it effectively becomes a JC school. I think the only way to get out in front of this is by making sure you are aggressive in poaching kids from other schools and applying the pressure, not just reacting by having your own kids poached.

The thing that sucks for coaches is that there is now no way to discipline a good athlete who misbehaves. If you try any coercive techniques to deal with bad behavior, you are inviting the kid to quit and go somewhere else. If the behavior is bad enough, so be it, get rid of the bad apple. But when you have an otherwise good kid screw up somehow, you’re gonna wind up just having to ignore the problem. If not, the downside is just too great to risk it,

If this rule holds smaller schools will become 100% stepping stones. Coaches will be unable to organize, plan and develop athletes over a three or four year span, even on a season timeframe when students can leave in the middle of the season, or during a game. One answer could be requiring the recruit sign on arrival that should they decide to portal out, that the poaching school reimburses the poached school for all costs to the school of the scholarship, benefits, training hours, supplies, and also equipment and facility depreciation during his time there. You are absolutely correct; this will otherwise kill collegiate sports for small schools and must be attacked immediately. Long term it is not good for poaching schools either either.

Your concerns are noted, but keep in mind Wulff, Baldwin & Best are/were great at driving EWU & EKG/Eastern Pride into guys and getting them to buy into being happy & productive in Cheney. Don’t be surprised if guys are beating Eastern’s door down to get to a quality program with guys at the next level. We’re in PAC-12 & Mountain West Country. GoEags!

On second thought, you might be right.

Nothing pithy to add. It's apparent there was/is something broken on the football coaching staff or in the administration and it's being reflected in these coaching defections.
It will require a level set. Assume Best is still the right option at head coach given the teams response to all the coach and player chaos. Of course, it could have been luck.

Legans statements sound like real pain. Just don't know enough about the situation.

It's difficult to watch things you take pride in as a fan and supporter struggle. This may be a short term aberration due to Covid lockdown lunacy.

EWU has created a lot of their own mess, and I struggle to sympathize to some degree. Eastern’s admin has let this nonsense about sucking money out of sports go on for so long without any major pushback or attempt to change the narrative. The University President should have stood arm in arm with Hickey and immediately squashed that bullshit before it even started. Legans, despite his recent behavior, is dead-on correct; how can you plan for the future when the university provides no vision as to what the future holds? The void of leadership at Eastern is just crippling.

FWIW, I'm sure there could be some housecleaning done to decrease cost exposure. I suspect there are plenty of places the AD could take off a few bucks (firing the women's b-ball coach in this climate and paying a buyout might've been a good place to start).

But to allow conversation about cutting the entire athletics department, discontinuing being a D1 program, or cutting sports is a topic that should never have even been started.

Agreed.
