This is an article from the Spokesman-Review and a great article that helped me understand this transfer portal game going on in all sports.

The big concern is if Eastern doesn’t manage this right, and so far it couldn’t be worse, then it effectively becomes a JC school. I think the only way to get out in front of this is by making sure you are aggressive in poaching kids from other schools and applying the pressure, not just reacting by having your own kids poached.
The thing that sucks for coaches is that there is now no way to discipline a good athlete who misbehaves. If you try any coercive techniques to deal with bad behavior, you are inviting the kid to quit and go somewhere else. If the behavior is bad enough, so be it, get rid of the bad apple. But when you have an otherwise good kid screw up somehow, you’re gonna wind up just having to ignore the problem. If not, the downside is just too great to risk it,

LDopaPDX said:FWIW, I'm sure there could be some housecleaning done to decrease cost exposure. I suspect there are plenty of places the AD could take off a few bucks (firing the women's b-ball coach in this climate and paying a buyout might've been a good place to start).
But to allow conversation about cutting the entire athletics department, discontinuing being a D1 program, or cutting sports is a topic that should never have even been started.
