TUCSON (AP) - Legendary University of Arizona football coach Dick Tomey is returning to Tucson for the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game. Tomey, who spent this season as the special teams coordinator at the University of Hawaii, is joining the coaching staff of the Stripes team. The Stripes head coach Pat Hill worked underneath Tomey from 1990-1991 as Arizona's offensive coordinator.
"In 39 years of coaching, Dick Tomey is one of the best people I've ever been around," said Hill. "He taught me a lot about people skills and I'm looking forward to seeing him."
Tomey was the head coach at Arizona from 1987-2000. He also led San Jose State from 2005-2009. He won Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1992 while with the Wildcats. Arizona finished with a 12-1 record in 1998 under Tomey's leadership and was ranked fourth in the AP Poll, the best post season ranking in school history. Tomey's career NCAA record is 183-145-7. Tomey, and all other Casino Del Sol All-Star Game coaches, will be available to the media after practices beginning Wednesday, January 11th at the Kino Sports Complex. The full practice schedule will be released in the next 48 hours.
Another coaching legend with University of Arizona ties, Ron McBride, has been added to the coaching staff of the Casino Del Sol College Football All-Star Game. McBride recently retired as the head coach of Weber State, capping off a 50-year career in coaching. McBride is best known for his 13-season stint as the head coach of the University of Utah and also spent three seasons at Arizona in the late 80s as a member of Tomey's coaching staff.
