Just wanted to make sure anyone who listens to the Monday night Coaches show knows that it is on KXLY 920-AM tonight, rather than our usual home at 700 ESPN. This is because of game 5 of the World Series, which 700 ESPN is contracted to carry. You can still listen on-line at http://www.kxly920.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
Answering a few questions from some of the other threads...I do not believe Renard came back into the game after injuring his ankle on Sac St.'s first possession. I could have missed it, but didn't see him limping off the field at any time after the original injury. He had to be taken off the field on a cart at the end of the game and was on crutches on the sideline. My GUESS is he will not play vs. PSU, but it is Senior Day, so we'll wait and see.
Paul Sorensen and I believe there were at least three ankle injuries from that ballgame...not sure of the severity of any of them, but I was told Renard and one other player were apparently on crutches after the game.
After Renard went out, the DT rotation mainly featured Moetului, Katoa and Zylstra. Evan Cook played some in the first half, but I didn't see him much, if any, in the second half. Maybe he was hurt...not sure. Moetului was the guy wearing #73 in the second half. His jersey was torn so they gave him Cody Humphrey's lineman number since Humphrey was playing TE. That fooled me too, as I didn't see Dexter's trademark hair spilling out from under his helmet. But it was him, not Humphrey out there.
Some people have commented on special teams play and it's my opinion this is the result of all the injuries. Backups who were special teams players are now starting and playing less on special teams and guys who were special teams backups are now playing. Those guys are usually inexperienced and are prone to more youthful mistakes. Again, just my opinion. EWU doesn't have enough healthy players right now to fill out the travel squad.
Coach Hansen and Coach Hunter have not and will not be replaced during the season. Their duties are falling to the existing members of the staff, which just makes their days longer. Those coaching positions will be filled in the off-season.
In conversations over the weekend, I heard some interesting and exciting possibilities for improving the East stands at Roos Field. I'm not going to comment on what they are as it's a long way from being decided, let alone announced, and there are multiple scenarios that could play out. But when it happens, and I think it will happen, fans will be happy about the continued improvements.
Finally, I hope everyone gets their tickets in advance for this Saturday's game. It will likely sell out and all Eagle fans should be there to salute the Senior class, playing in probably their last game on Roos Field. These young men have helped lead EWU to new highs and are a great group of people. Plus it's also Military Appreciation Day. There will be limited edition Adidas EWU football Camo shirts for sale and you will also have a chance to bid on game-worn EWU jerseys, which will be great one-of-a-kind commemorative items. Look for the tent by the flag pole at Roos Field. The auction will take place throughout the game.
