Coaches show tonight

Just wanted to let everyone know that there will be a coaches show tonight from the Q Sports Bar at Northern Quest Resort and Casino. Coach Baldwin will start at 5:30 with film of the Husky game and then the show will start at 6:00 on 700 ESPN in Spokane, which is available on-line at http://www.700espn.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.espnnorthwest.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. You can hear the show inside our room at the Q and get some good food as well.

Paul Sorensen and I will ask Coach about the Husky game, about the injuries coming out of the game, some decisions on players redshirting and about South Dakota as well. There will be other guests too, either two players or one player and an assistant coach. If you're in Spokane, hope you can join us at the Q. And if not, I hope you can listen on-line starting at 6:00pm.

If you have an iPad you can download the free "Spokane Radio" app from iTunes and listen to that way as well.

Larry, I would be one really appreciative eagle fan if you guys could find a way to podcast the show. :thumb:

Ditto on the podcast. I never seem to be able to time it right to catch the live broadcast of the show but would definitely PAY to hear the podcast (perfer it for free, mind you)!

Larry:

I had an new Eagle fan originally from SEC country tell me that he catches our radio broadcast in Olympia and thinks our radio team would be the best in that conference. Says he can't believe how a relatively small school can field such a great broadcast team. :thumb:

No question. Larry and Paul are absolute pro's.

I can't believe that Larry The Voice of the Eagles for all these years is not doing basketball as well anymore??

Spoeagle,
Larry haven't done Basketball since last year. I guess to get ESPN 700am, which now broadcast our home and away games for both FB/BB was an agreement between someone and Larry Weir. He is the best damn Radio Announcer I have ever heard, and I have heard many of them. Dennis Patchen is now doing the BB Games. Vic Wallace

Not sure where to post this, but I heard that Dennis Patchin is working Montana football games this year. If this is true, i'm furious. How can our athletic director allow the so-called voice of EWU basketball to also work for Montana. This can't happen. It makes us look small-time. And while I'm complaining, I'd also like to know why we only have four home football games. Somebody give me some answers!

Patchin is NOT the voice of the Eagles. That title belong to Larry. :D

As far as whether or not Patchin is working the Montana games, who cares? Although I would find that kind of hard to believe if he were, because Montana has those Mick and Gurns homers that always do their broadcasts. Night and day between those jokers and Larry and Paul.

The 4 game thing has been discussed ad nauseum on this board, but long story short - we generally rotate between 5 and 6 home games a season, depending on the conference rotation. This would have been a 5 game year. Most years we play a Division II team or a second FBS game like we did in 2008. DII games do not count towards the requisite 7 wins required to make the playoffs, so the AD wanted a game that we should be favored in and that would count towards the playoffs. Enter South Dakota. Scheduling OOC FCS games is difficult on the west coast anyway, as the only other western FCS teams are mostly all about to be absorbed into the Big Sky next season.

Patchin is going to do the TV broadcast for the fizzlies this year, its a huge step up for them

To me that's unacceptable that Patchin is calling both EWU and Montana games. That's like Washington State and Washington sharing announcers. We're rivals with Montana, right?

Depends on who you ask. I could care less if they consider us their rivals or not. And if he's doing the Griz broadcasts, well, good for him. He's a sports announcer, he goes where the money is. And we have our own guys, which are great.

Because it's different sports, I don't think it's that much of a conflict of interest. I do know one of those guys on Patchin, Osso, and the wingman is an EWU alum, though, so if it's Patchin I agree that's kinda odd. But like I said, dude's got to make a living, right?

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. It means a lot to me and is greatly appreciated. It's been my pleasure to be your eyes for the last 20 years. I hope to be there for the next 20!

Time for my token plug...our airtime on Saturday is at 1:30, with the kickoff at 2:05pm PDT. As always, the game is on the radio in the Spokane area at 700 ESPN and for everyone else on-line at http://www.700espn.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.espnnorthwest.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Paul Sorensen will re-join me this week as he was watching his son play his first collegiate game for Idaho St. at WSU last Saturday.

EWU must contain the USD QB, who is an outstanding runner as well as passer. They are a veteran team with plenty of experience and will be fired up to host the #1 team in the nation. It will be a tough test, but one for which the team will be ready. Travel will be a rare regular season charter flight, so sitting around airports all day should not be an issue. Go Eags!

excellent news on the charter. I heard even University of Hawaii is flying commercial these days. Hopefully they're getting there a few days early to get acclimated, but knowing eastern, probably just the day before.

Back to the "Eastern Voice" issue, why doesn't the AD just demand to AM700 that Larry be the voice for everything? I think we all agree he should be.

jimboh,

I don't think anyone is arguing that Larry is truely the ONLY AND ALWAYS will be "our voice of the Eagles"...He is undoubtedly the best radio announcer I've ever heard too..."Giddy up horse"!!!!!The simple answer is that Patchin isn't under contract for EWU. He is employed by KXLY Radio Group in Spokane and is free to work for whoever he wishes as long as it's not a competitor in the same market. Also, just like any radio station who is the "home of any program" they normally want to have their own talent who are employed at their station. Prime example; Larry used to be the "voice of the Spokane Shock" along with color commentary by his great side kick Paul Sorenson. When the Shock switched "radio homes" from 1510 KGA to ESPN 700 unfortunately Dennis Patchin and Keith Osso took over since they were "KXLY" employees. That's the unfortunate industry. Hope that helps...

EdubAlum,

It's definitely not just "EWU" who flys in the day before a game. That's pretty much nation wide (FBS to FCS). Too much unnecessary downtime for the student athletes to sit around. It's normally the head coaches call anyways. They want to get in and get back home.

Irrelevant. The goal of the coaches in travel situations is to make every trip feel like the same routine. For the most part, we would leave Cheney early in the AM on Friday (for a Sat game), stay in similar hotels, and have nearly identical meals while on the road. It is for this reason I refuse to eat at Old Country Buffet ever again haha. The only time we left early was when we played West Virgina which, due to a logistical nightmare, wouldn't have been feasible to reach if we left on Friday. School being in session or not was never a factor for travel plans.
