Collin Chiverton is a Warrior!

I try not to voice my opinions on my posts, but in this case I will. I've been reading the criticism regarding Collin Chiverton growing as the basketball season continues, such as him being a selfish player. Coach Hayford confirmed in his post game interview tonight that Collin not only has one fracture in his foot, he has two fractures that he is playing on. Hayford continued to say that he is playing with an enormous amount of pain and they would have redshirted him this year if he had not already used his readshirt at Saint Mary's. Junior college highlights show how much explosiveness he possesses when he's at full strength which seemed to allow him to have a great intermediate scoring arsenal. I had a very a good view of him at tonight's game, I was impressed with his cheering on of his teammates while he was on the bench, it didn't seem like he was being selfish to me, it seemed like he was giving everything he had to help his team to victory! If I had to go into battle Collin Chiverton seems to be a person I would want on my side!

Wow. Good post. Three points jump to mind.

1) Chiverton is warrior, a selfish warrior. The one thing you can count on if you went "into battle" with him is that you would touch the ball very little!

2) My criticism of Chiverton is not of his person, but of him as a player. Injury or not, he is a guard with 9 assists in 15 games! He is the definition of a volume shooter. He played a mere 15 minutes, yet was able to somehow get off the third most shots on the team! I was at the game last night as well and sat directly across the bench and watched Chiverton's body language. He was supportive as you say. He was not selfish on the bench. Again, not saying a selfish person, but a selfish player.

3) What is Coach thinking playing a kid with a known fracture in his foot, or two fractures. Foot fractures do not get better by playing on them, they get better by rest alone! If it is a stress fracture, it will do more damage. So the injury must have been a minor one that has grown into more of a major one. Kudos to Chiverton to gutting it out and for Coach sitting him to protect him.

Again, I do not know Chiverton, other than that he has bounced around to three different schools in three years with EWU being his fourth. He is talented for sure and brings great size in a guard position. I just wish that he were more of a team player. Stats don't lie, nor do my eyeballs!

Man, it sucks he's still having foot problems. These guys want to win, badly, so it does not surprise me that he has been playing. Hopefully at some point we can get into some situations to where he's not having to play much and heal that thing. He had a really off night last night.

I really like chiverton, but after watching last night, I really do agree he takes some bad shots and needs to pass more. When he is hot, he is tough as nails, but there are times where he takes some shots that just boggle my mind as to why.

If the foot is a problem, and this is the 3rd or 4th time we've heard this, than maybe he needs to sit out a week or two, depending on how bad it is. Coach Hayford said at the beginning of the year Chiverton was not at full strength and it appears to be getting worse rather than better. Playing with a stress fracture has to be painful, I don't think we can question his toughness. We don't have too difficult a schedule of games coming up so now would be a good time for him to heal up, because if we want a shot to win the conference tourney, we will need him and need him to play well.

Bottom line is that a healthy, more controlled chiverton could help this team make a deep run to the conference tourney and the team is much better with him than without.

Talked to Coach Hayford tonight, and full story on blog but long story short - Chiverton fractured his foot this summer, had surgery, and was cleared to practice on Nov 1. Between Christmas/New Year's, he got another hairline fracture in his foot - has been cleared to play by doctors, but is being checked out every 2-3 days.

Also confirmed that Chiverton likely would have redshirted if not for having already used it his freshman year at SMC.

I realize that it can't be done this far into the season, but if this is an injury that occurred over the summer, why didn't Hayford seek a medical redshirt? I don't see it that often in College BB, but in football you always are seeing guys that are 6th year players because of medical redshirts. Seems like that would have been the most beneficial to Chiverton, and the team, seeing as he is now limited to 15 minutes a game because of pain in his foot. Don't get me wrong, I am impressed at the ability he has been able to play at with this injury, but imagine the potential player we could be looking at if he was 100%.

I did some research on this because I was curious, and this is what I found (it is kind of confusing, so I am not positive I have it all right):

- In order to be granted a medical redshirt for a 6th year of eligibility (and I realize this is Chiverton's 4th year, but if he got a redshirt then his senior year would be his 6th year), a player's previous redshirt must have been due to circumstances out of his control, such as a previous medical redshirt.

So basically, if you already have redshirted a year, you can only apply for a medical redshirt if the previous redshirt was because of a medical issue. In Chiverton's case, it was not, so he was not eligible to redshirt for a medical reason.

An example would be Case Keenum of Houston... he got a medical redshirt to play this year in his 6th year, but that was only because in 2006 he got a medical redshirt for a broken collarbone, and then in 2010 got another medical redshirt because of a torn ACL.

Another example... Damian Lillard got a medical redshirt last year because he had not previously redshirted. If he had redshirted his freshman year just because they didn't think he was ready and wanted him to sit out a year, he would not have been eligible for a medical redshirt.

I am not positive that this is how it works, but based on doing some reading that is my understanding of things. Essentially, since Chiverton's first redshirt was not medically related, he could not apply for a medical redshirt.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up Jon. You have to love the NCAA, and their rules that not even they can understand from time to time. Appreciate you looking into it and clearing it up!

Yeah your question made me curious... it is certainly kind of a bizarre rule, not exactly the most intuitive.

I also was at the game Thursday night...as I have missed very few over the past 10-12 years. Here are my thoughts on Chiverton and our team:

-I applaud Chiverton for playing with a broken bone in his foot just as Glen Dean did a year ago. However, if he is going to continue to play he should try to do what he can to help the team win, and, quite simply, he is not doing that. He continues to take the most shots on the team while shooting a terrible percentage (the only 2 games he shot +50% were vs D3 teams). Also, instead of doing the other things to help us win, he continues to be an indifferent defender, a very unwilling passer (9 assists in 15 games), a pathetic rebounder (only 2 rebounds per game when Colimon and Forbes get 3+), and doesnt get to the FT line (Colimon @ 6'1" has shot more FT's). None of these areas has changed from when he was healthy. As big, strong, athletic and talented as Chiv is, he should be a really good rebounder and defender in the Big Sky and be able to get fouled similar to Struckey/Lillard. Calling a guy who wont do the tough things on a basketball floor (defend, rebound, get to FT line) a "warrior" is a joke. At this point, he is nothing more than a high-volume, low-percentage "chucker" (apologies to Seinfeld!).

-It doesnt make sense to me that Kelly is playing more than Winford when Winford is clearly a better player. If Coach simply thinks we must have more size at the small forward position, how about playing Tremayne there. At least he can bring something to the party. Weber played 3 guards the entire game, so it made sense to me to play Winford in that game.

-With 2 minutes to go in the game we were behind by 6 points (?) and on defense and Coach took Colimon, Ederaine, Forbes, and Griffin out of the game??? Those are our 4 best defensive players! Weber promptly ran the shot clock down, gave the ball to Lillard with Kelly guarding him (a huge mismatch), and Lillard scored easily effectively ending the game. Maybe somebody could call in and ask Coach on the radio show what his thoughts were on that. I would be curious to hear. None of those 4 guys had 4 fouls.

Chiverton has been a beast since the 2nd half of the NAU game.

Since the 2nd half of NAU, all of Sac State and UNC he has the following stats

19 for 32 from the floor, 13 for 22 from 3 point range, 5 assists, 56 points and all in only 57 minutes of play.

Hopefully he can rest this week and heal that foot for our 3 home conference games coming up.

A terrific 2 and half game stretch for Chiverton. He is playing at a very high level. Hopefully he can keep it up. It often takes JC guys half a year to "figure it out" much like Carter for GU last year (and Colimon and Ederaine for us). Given Chiv's year at St Mary's, I didnt think he would need the adjustment time to D1, but it looks like he is on his way to a great final 6 weeks. For us to challenge at the top of the league, we must have him and Colimon and Ederaine all three playing well.
